    Benefits to being Deaf/HOH

I think that I have learnt patience from being HOH. I wonder if this is correct: HOH/deafies are "better listeners".

    Hearing people's view of CI

I am one of those sinners who thought that CI can "restore" hearing. It is quite complicated, I now realize. Here is a video about CI and music: Charles Limb: Building the musical muscle | Video on TED.com. The guy there says that listening to music is difficult or impossible with CI. But if...

Most Useful Devices for Deaf People

I like texting on mobile phones. It is a great thing, for deafies and hearies alike. Youtube's automatic subtitling is a brilliant idea. The accuracy is poor sometimes. I only have 50% hearing in one ear and that is not good enough most of the time. But subtitles + some sound = useful. The...

    Benefits to being Deaf/HOH

Here is a good article about introverts and how society treats them: The Power of Introverts: A Manifesto for Quiet Brilliance: Scientific American What I mean is not "introverts = deafies" but "treatment of introverts = treatment of deafies".

    Benefits to being Deaf/HOH

A person is more than the sum of his/her parts. A minor deficit should not define who I am. Another way to put it: There are a million things that I can do - and some of them terrifically well - and do not want to be judged on one criterion only.

    Hello from Scotland!

Cool meeting someone with a similar background. I am also in the natural sciences. I am doing a PhD in bioinformatics (biology + computer science + statistics) in Cork, Ireland. I have 50% hearing in one ear. Welcome to AD.

What did you do today? Part II

Been reading all day. After a Christmas leave (I just returned - it was a post-Christmas Christmas holiday), my brain no longer feels like a piece of paper. It has been raining today. Forgot my umbrella: it is a bit annoying reading with my glasses afterwards.

    What's your lunch tonight?

I returned from my holiday yesterday. After a suggestion from a friend, I chose to have some Irish beer: Beamish. That and spaghetti with meat sauce.

Do you guys embrace your hearing loss/deafness?!

Sometimes, I wonder if people are just clueless and use mental shortcuts when thinking about a complex problem. Hearies think that glasses apply to HAs and CIs too. Glasses are some of the most simple and useful inventions in the world, but the neural circuitry of the auditory system is...

Technological progress: better hearing than normal hearing

Oh, the equivalent of CI for the blind: a prosthethic eye. Quite interesting to see: Sheila Nirenberg: A prosthetic eye to treat blindness | Video on TED.com There are subtitles.

Do you guys embrace your hearing loss/deafness?!

I loved to hear that you have found a way to live that suits you. Having a CI or HA that works half way is not pleasant sometimes. And mainstreaming is not pleasant at all. I agree.

Technological progress: better hearing than normal hearing

You are both right. With the accumulation of experience, it might turn out better over time. That is, learning by doing.

    Confession Time :)

Yeah, not bad. The most difficult step is getting out of bed or the couch or whatever. I go out running sometimes. It feels really nice going out after spending hours in front of a computer screen.

    What's your lunch tonight?

Spaghetti and meatballs. A kiwi, orange and an apple afterwards.

    What's your lunch tonight?

"Vegetarian chicken" is contradictory. It sounds like a riddle.

What did you do today? Part II

What allergy is that? How severe is it? I don't have it myself, I am just curious.

What are you thinking about? Part V

It has been cold today. It will be warmer tomorrow.
