the next step towards becoming an interperter

The OP mentioned an AAS in ASL which means that while they taught ASL, they most likely didn't teach the cognitive process of interpretation, ethics, practicum, etc. Interpreter education is starting to go online. I have heard of a few programs that offer it, and today at Gallaudet I saw a...

    Japanese Automated Animated Sign Langauge

Actually, this is quite possible in Japan. I noticed the animated character is talking about earthquakes and when the trains will operate. And my JSL is very bad, so if I understood it, that's surprising! But JSL doesn't use as many facial elements as ASL does. When I was helping to teach...

Online courses/degree for sign Langauge Interpreter?!?!?!

It's just a generic website...you could put Nuclear Physicist in there and they would happily help you find that too!

    What about used hearing aids??

Getting the mold made usually takes a couple of weeks. You would probably also have your hearing test at a separate appointment from the rest.

    What about used hearing aids??

I did check into that. For my insurance, that would only cover if something happened to them inside my home. If there was loss, damage, theft, etc. from anywhere else - homeowners would not cover it.

    What about used hearing aids??

Theft and damage, yes that's easy. Loss is harder because that's your fault. Sometimes they can be put on homeowners or renter's insurance but not always. Sometimes they fall under personal property protection but not always. There are also companies that specialize in hearing aid insurance...

    What about used hearing aids??

If the audiologist didn't have the right equipment, the HAs are too old and you don't want those. :giggle:

    What about used hearing aids??

I did check with my audiologist actually. They weren't happy that I wanted to go the eBay route (and this is at a university, you'd think they wouldn't care!) but they said yes the Resound Plus5 would probably be fine for me, so I got them with Buy It Now.

    What about used hearing aids??

My current hearing aids are from eBay. I lost my $5700 HAs in Sept 2010 and lost the $1250 replacement pair (well one of them) in Jan 2011. So I got a pair of Resound Plus5 on eBay for $300 including shipping, and my audiologist programmed them for $40. I figure that since I lose hearing aids...

    Swear words on captioned DVD's?

Didn't we just have a thread on this?

    Forced to Voice

You're totally right about that. Some people are that way. However...doesn't mean she has to do it. They can just deal with hearing the interpreter's voice.

    How are CCs created?

Captioners for taped programs are usually working from a script and they can include time codes, so it's easy to match them up with the speech. For live events, they can only be displayed as fast as the captioner can go. I think average captioning is 225wpm, using specialized equipment, the...

Much more captioned content on Netflix?

Yes, they have started captioning more and more stuff now. Whether or not it's worth it YET is up to you...look at those lists and ask yourself if it's stuff you want to watch! I use phlixie.com and it seems to be quite accurate. For any title, you can view it on the netflix website and see...

    Forced to Voice

*facepalm* You can't do anything to a non-RID member by complaining to RID. Is it really that hard to understand what I meant?! I already discussed complaining to state agencies.

    Forced to Voice

Thank you for the clarification. You can't do anything to an interpreter who is not an RID member.

    Forced to Voice

Again, this is only useful if the terp is certified by RID. If not, there is NOTHING that RID can do. If the state has certification or licensure, a complaint can be made to the state.

    Forced to Voice

There can be a million reasons for not voicing. The interpreter only needs to hear one: "I don't want to." By the same token, of course, deaf people who do want to voice for themselves should be given the opportunity. However, that does not preclude the terp voicing as well. I say this...
