    Wow, you're fast! Thank you.

What do you do in your spare time?

. Interesting...second person to say that here. I'm new here so I'm just getting to know how people cope/accept/adapt to their varying levels of hearing/deafness. I guess I can understand the desire to be seen as 'normal'. I must admit, when I first got hearing aids I wanted them to be as...

What do you do in your spare time?

I live in Toronto, Canada. It' a big city. One would think there would be more going on here but I haven't found anything. A school for the deaf an hour across town, that seems to be about it. I don't think i could learn ASL at the moment, I'm just not ready for that. Like you say though...

    Hoh mum, hearing kids

My kids are teenagers. I try very hard to show them that I love them no matter what. I was brought up feeling like you must earn a parent's love. Definitely not a healthy environment for a child, unless of course you are naturally good at everything and have no disabilities. Hiding my...

    Coping with being hoh?

I'm trying to be nicer to myself. I'm trying to figure out how to turn my HOH status into a pro not a con. I'm trying to socialize more. I'm trying to empathize with a kid who doesn't think I listen to her (I try really, really hard but she is hard to hear and not very tolerant of my hearing...

What are you doing right now? Part II

What I'm doing right now...hmmm, wishing I was skiing at Lake Tahoe!

What do you do in your spare time?

It sounds to me like it is time for some awareness-building. I just told my chiropractor that I can't hear the radio playing in the background (other than random, garbled noises), and that I also can't hear a word her assistant is saying. I just kind of nod, or clue in when she stares at me...

What do you do in your spare time?

I guess I just kinda want people to get where I'm coming from. My guess is that's most likely to happen here, in this forum and not out there IRL. As you say, unless people are signing, being d/Deaf/HOH is pretty invisible. It's even more invisible when you go from 'not understanding a single...

What do you do in your spare time?

I guess it doesn't matter, I just want to meet people who are tolerant and who like doing stuff that doesn't require normal hearing. Still keeping an eye out for deaf/HOH groups in my area though.

What do you do in your spare time?

Ah, so they'd be more welcome if they showed a little respect. I see. Wow, 12 years. I guess I came to the right place. Can't have that kind of longevity without a great group of people.

    Tip of the iceberg...

Did you hide your deafness, even from yourself? Here are some of the early signs I ignored or thought was my inability to pay attention properly: - staring at people's lips when they talk - can't follow group conversations - can't follow fast talkers - can't hear 'low talkers' - go ballistic...

What do you do in your spare time?

I've been thinking about the threads I've read where there is a distinctive animosity towards students coming to this site to learn about the deaf/HOH. I'm new here so I guess i haven't got annoyed yet by answering somebody's questions about our various issues. The common response seems to be...

What have you done for your apd (auditory processing disorder)?

Thanks. Some good ideas here. I kind of gave up on hobbies since I keep getting injured. Perhaps I need to be more creative and also pay better attention to my physical limitations.

    Hoh mum, hearing kids

You know, I've been thinking about this lately. Perhaps starting with a few signs in problem areas would help. I'll have to pay attention to where most of our communication problems arise...Oh, I just asked my daughter if she'd like to learn ASL as a family. She said "No, I'm already having...

    Hoh mum, hearing kids

Thanks for the reminder 'pat my leg' - yes, basically remind them to get my attention first. Screaming...yes, that happens once they are super frustrated. But...Ouch...with hearing aids in, that HURTS! I'm trying to teach them the middle ground - 1. Come into the room I'm in instead of...

    Hoh mum, hearing kids

Unfortunately family is the biggest problem. Impatient and judgemental and intolerant of my APD/hearing/memory issues. The only one I get along with has ADD and OCD and he is also stigmatized for his problems. I generally prefer strangers because they just tend to be a whole lot nicer! At...

Has anybody had any experience with the Tomatis method? A link...for those who have not heard of it: http://thepowerofsound.net/tomatis/

What have you done for your apd (auditory processing disorder)?

Absolutely not the same thing. However one exacerbates the other if you have both. Hearing loss for me is apparently due to damage to the auditory nerve. APD for me is a cognitive/comprehension issue. Without hearing aids, I pretty much don't hear anything other than garbled noise. With...

What have you done for your apd (auditory processing disorder)?

A very interesting read. Thank you for digging it up! I'm still reading the article but it is comforting to see myself described so accurately. The only major difference is that it didn't appear to affect my school work until about grade 9 or so when it became really difficult for me. I still...

I'd love to look at those studies. Do you have any links to them?
