    "i'm a little bit deaf"....

It irks me when that happens. I wonder if they say it to try to relate? The most annoying to me is when they diagnose themselves with nothing to back them up. "Oh, I have hearing problems too. I think I'm kind of deaf in my left ear. I've been jumping around from doctor to doctor and they all...

I'm hoh living in a world of hearing that i don't quite belong in...

I admit for a while I had a hard time coping with it, but now I view it as a strength, because if I was born hearing I probably would have viewed things differently. Because of my experiences I am actually getting my degrees in education and working on getting certified to work with children who...

"why would they use him and not just a hearing asl interpeter???"

That's one of the things I was pointing out that irked me. I think the issue is that there are many hearing people who know nothing about deaf culture and can say or assume stupid things. For example, my first semester in college one of my teachers threw away the sheet of accommodations made by...

Can someone explain what a deaf person is "supposed to look like"?

It seems like a lot of people here (including myself) has experienced someone telling them that they don't look deaf, HoH, or like they have hearing loss. I'm just curious if there is some stereotypical way people with any type of deafness are supposed to look like and how that stereotype came...

"why would they use him and not just a hearing asl interpeter???"

I haven't asked him, just like others stated it can be scripted, there could be a teleprompter, or there could be a hearing ASL translator translating to him what is being said. Another option that I'm not sure if it was mentioned or not is live captioning. When I have classes other than ASL or...

"why would they use him and not just a hearing asl interpeter???"

He shows a lot of expressions and emotion just like a person who is deaf would, because he is also deaf... They do not mention it in the videos or in the media, but I've been one of his students since January. I guarantee you he is completely deaf and not just a CODA.

Hearing aids and amplifiers don't work for me?

Yeah. You're right. I did some research and it seems BAHA probably isn't the best for me. I have mixed hearing loss and I have a disconnect where my brain does not properly process sounds making it where I hear it distorted no matter how loud it is. My ENT says he doesn't handle disconnects...

"why would they use him and not just a hearing asl interpeter???"

So recently my teacher became viral. During Hurricane Irma he was one of the ASL interpreter for one of the emergency conferences held by Governor Scott. He became know as the "Most animated interpreter" because he used body language and facial expressions while most interpreters don't. Some...

    Hi everyone

Hi! Welcome. QI was born hard of hearing and with a disconnect. I also have constant tinnitus and have had it ever since my first eardrum reconstruction back when I was 18 (I just turned 23 at the end of August). We seem to have some things in common such as writing, watching movies and anime...

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

That right there is my biggest pet peeve. Obviously you weren't being serious about that, but that is a serious question I get when people find out that I do have a level of deafness (hard of hearing but also with a disconnect so not only is my hearing bad but the little I do hear my brain does...

Zeus as in the ancient Greek god of thunder and the sky. I love ancient mythology. I don't know exactly how it's pronounced spoken wise, because people with good hearing seem not to understand when I try to say his name (even though I have taken 8+ years of speech therapy I really do not hear...

    Hard-of-hearing entrepreneur-to-be

Hey. I was also born heard of hearing. I also happen to have a disconnect which means that my brain does not properly process the little amount I can hear. I also grew up in the hearing world. This year is the first year I was introduced to the deaf community through my teacher (he's completely...
