I don't know about Mellenart as I don't know her history, but when I compare CI sounds against hearing aids I usually refer to the time before my hearing suddenly decreased, i.e. the peak performance that I remember getting from my HAs. So when I got my CI, my first goal was to reach on par...

    I gots good news

Wow, that is excellent. I agree that you are definitely doing better than average for this stage. I agree with WPG that you may find that the rate of improvement could slow down (since you have had such a big result in the first week) and not to get too disappointed or frustrated if that...

    Activated 3 days ago...

Hi there, The only advice I can give at this stage is to give it time. Everything you have described is completely normal for the first few days weeks post CI activation. Did anyone prepare you for the fact that it would sound terrible to begin with? When I had my first activation, it...

    I gots good news

You could even practice with this VOA News - Inside the Complex Worlds of Deafness and Deaf Culture in America :giggle: Seriously though, I found the Voice of America transcripts great when I was starting up with my CI.

    Bilateral Implants

Can you please back up as to why you think it's okay for people with auditory neuropathy to get simultaneous CIs when studies have shown that they have more variable results with CIs than the general CI population? Also, I've told you this before, there has been reports of very young children...

    question

Does your audiologist run the electrode balancing test after the map? You know, where you have to determine if the two beeps sound roughly about the same volume to each other. If there was a problem with the green dot, it would have sounded much more loud than the beep it was tested against.

    question

Hi Skullchick, I had the same problem with the pain too on my first CI ear. You need to go to your audiologist to get remapped. My audie fixed the problem for me by shutting off a couple of the electrodes where the pain was occurring. It seems that I have a sensitive spot on my hearing nerve...

    Bilateral Implants

Another sequential bilateral user who has noticed a significant difference. I really wasn't expecting it but compared to the "powerful" hearing aid that I previously had in my last implanted ear, the new CI really leaves it for dead. The improved result may not show itself in booth sentence...

    CI blog for my daughter

Great to hear everything went smoothly. :) PS looked at her blog - she is just so gorgeous!

update on my 9.5-week old son - now has HA's

To be honest, I don't think that AD is a parenting resource board all around. I've noticed that even those hearing parents who don't go the CI route and who sign do not seem to hang around for long unless they are debate focussed. AD is more debate focussed and everyone has their two cents to...

update on my 9.5-week old son - now has HA's

I think there are two definitions for HOH, one is cultural and the other is audiological. Cultural = all range of hearing losses, wears hearing aids and doesn't sign. Audiological = falling in mild/moderate hearing loss range, able to function in most hearing conditions including phone use but...

    I gots good news

So good to hear the healing is going well. From what I recall, itching is a good sign that the scar is healing as it should. Not long til activation! Remember to have low expectations at the start and then gradually build your way up.

update on my 9.5-week old son - now has HA's

Hi Jesse, I support your choice too and there have been many oral deaf who are okay with the way they were raised. However, I do think the others have made a good point in that it's harder to address language delays further down the track if a particular method has not shown itself...

    I gots good news

Yes, we've been there. I can't say anything to take the nerves away but you'll feel relieved when it's all over. Have you frozen meals, borrowed a recliner, checked out trashy novels/movies etc etc? I found that the nesting helped keep me busy. Good luck with it all!

Long-time CI user, looking for advice going forward - N22 Freedom?

WGP, Good luck! It would be interesting to hear how different the Freedom sounds for you compared to the 3G and Spectra.

    CI Moments

I can relate to that feeling. When I have overseas visitors I really enjoy travelling with them and looking at my country through their eyes. They notice the little things and details that I take for granted. When I first moved to Australia, I was in tourist mode for about a year. It's...

    Fully Implanted Cyborg

Wow, you must be our fastest one at a time bilateral cyborg. Congrats and it's good to hear you feel so good after surgery. Glad that the left ear has worked out so well too :)

    My time has come!

I think even if you are one of the ones who appreciates music more with a CI, you'd have to give it longer as you were only activated recently. A lot of people have commented that music was one of the last things that fell into place and often took months. For me, music sounded a whole lot...
