    From Unilateral to Bilateral?

You are an awesome, awesome, person. Two kids with RAD? I'm sure having a stable and loving home is very beneficial for them. (I used to be a nanny for a pediatrician who adopted 4 special needs kids. The kiddo I was actually nannying had Down syndrome and was deaf but all the kiddos blossomed...

Phonak Naida UP & Super Seals.

I used super seals with my old hearing aids and was not impressed. Naidas aren't waterproof and super seals only help waterproof the microphone and battery.

Deaf children benefit from learning sign language, says research

ASL is a complete language but for kids (like the kids I went to school with) who have cochlear implants or powerful hearing aids and can understand speech, I think that SEE is more useful in mainstream classes. SEE doesn't depend on the ability of the interpreter to understand the subject (I...

    ASL for mild hearing loss?

Learning ASL is beneficial for all kids but realistically, a kid with mild hearing loss (PTA under 40db) who has appropriately fitting hearing aids should ABSOLUTELY be able to hear and understand all the sounds of speech. Take your kid to a pediatric audiologist and maybe investigate...

9 year old Aided main stream child so many questions

First, a kid with mild hearing loss should be using hearing aids and an FM system especially in elementary school. The FM system will ensure that the teacher's voice goes directly to his ears without any background noise. If your son is having trouble despite appropriate hearing aids and FM...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Finding out you have hearing loss sucks but it could be so much worse. I found out I had moderate to severe SNHL when I was 17. I had a major drop in hearing when I was 20. Two years ago I lost all functional hearing in my left ear. So within the past 10 years I've gone from pretty normal...

Deaf children benefit from learning sign language, says research

First of all, the "article" is not a peer reviewed article that is written by scientists. It is a fluff article written by someone who knows nothing about the subject (they only cite 2 articles). And, the articles mentioned don't advocate sign above any other method. They merely indicate that...

    True or False?? About CI

You have a great point. It is hard work to learn a new skill. Learning how to interpret sound is hard work and takes commitment. That doesn't mean everybody who works hard will be successful but not working hard is a sure way to failure in anything.

    Dreads?

The only issue would be if you have dark hair and dark skin. In that are it could be difficult to distinguish our hands from the background (which might be the dreads). On a subpar Internet connection the contrast is greatly degraded. Interpreters are generally told to dress in muted colors that...

    True or False?? About CI

I'm going to pretend that all sorts of other posts didn't already happen and say that it really depends on the individual. Some Deaf people are not helped at all by CIs. Some Deaf people are helped immensely and are even able to understand speech. So, it really depends on the individual. A...

    Sorenson Communications

I would ask you if you know what TTY is? Basically, yes, most/just about all Deaf people know about VRS, and Captel, and TTY. It is how we communicate with people. The companies (Sorensom and CDVRS and others) arrange for Deaf people to receive free videophones. I've used VRS before but...

    Mistaken for deaf

You have a good point. I should consider that the poster could genuinely be telling the truth. But from a scientific standpoint, 99% of people with DID have had severe and long lasting childhood trauma. The OP says she didn't. The prevailing research indicates that the alternate personalities...

Naida CI Q70 approved in the US!!

I have progressive hearing loss that probably began when I was a kid (I had to have tons of speech therapy) but I was a really bright kid and got by. When I finally got my hearing tested at age 18 it was moderate to severe. At 27 it is severe to profound.

    Mistaken for deaf

I am very skeptical of this. Eliciting a reflexive response (by poking or pinching a patient) is a wonderful way to tell if the patient is comatose, or if something else (such as a psychogenic disorder is happening). It can, however, be faked. I highly doubt that the OP truly didn't utter a...

Naida CI Q70 approved in the US!!

I'm hoping that I will pass which means fail the tests. I already have the most powerful hearing aids so "passing" the cochlear implant testing would mean failing all the other tests. But I'm apparently great at failing tests especially since my hearing aids just make things worse for me.

Naida CI Q70 approved in the US!!

According to my insurance page "what is not covered...hearing aids, hearing examinations/tests for the prescription/fitting of hearing aids, and cochlear electromagnetic hearing devices" But my mom is a nurse who often works in appeals for different insurance things and she thinks that they...

My CI surgery got moved closer!

My husband and I talked about what would happen of for some reason our insurance approved a CI. We came to the decision that my husband would take care of me immediately after surgery but my mom, who is a nurse, would stay with us for a few days. And if my mom couldn't come, I have two aunts who...

My CI surgery got moved closer!

Good luck with your CI surgery! I haven't had that surgery yet (I hope to sometime soon) but I've had many other surgeries. My advice is: 1. Have a person or people who are committed to take care of your for a few days 2. Make sure you have bland food like mashed potatoes, chicken noodle soup...

    Brand new news to me

I'm really not kidding a out student doctors skipping lectures. But even if they went to lectures they have professors wh have never actually practiced medicine.
