    Hearing aids are useless

I can't agree enough. I thought I did really well with ultra power hearing aids despite profound deafness. I mean, I finished college, had a job, went through most of graduate school. But I was not actually hearing. Last December I said, "to hell with this", got tested for a CI, found out...

One month and one week post-activation

I had my official speech testing on Friday. Thresholds between 15 and 20dB AZBio in quiet: 96% AZBio w/+20 noise (speech is 20dB louder than noise): 98% AZBio w/+10 noise: 85% (at this point the audiologist said I was "doing too well" because she has to keep adding more noise until...

One month and one week post-activation

Just incase anybody has any questions about "real life" experiences with a cochlear implant, on Friday I gave an hour long talk and answered questions from faculty members as part of my Master's thesis defense. I heard and understood questions from people in the back of the room. I hear and...

    Finally!!!

YEah, hybrid implants won't use a standard length electrode array so you will also not qualify if you have progressive hearing loss (because if your low frequency hearing declines, you won't be able to use the hearing aid portion and the electrode won't cover the low frequency area of the...

    To Implant or not..

I was a "model" hearing aid user. I worked every second to scrape together any speech sounds to the point where I would come home, remove my UP hearing aids, and refuse to talk to anyone for several hours. I'd drink a glass of wine or two until the tinnitus subsided enough for me to venture into...

One month and one week post-activation

deafdyke- I was able to choose which ear I had implanted. I decided to go with the ear that could still understand speech. It was a hard decision but with my neuroscience background, I knew that the neural pathways for hearing were well established in my right ear, whereas my left ear was much...

    CI & HA decorations

It is pretty damn sexy. I'm glad I went with 2 Naidas (I had the option of 2 Naidas, one Naida and one Neptune, or 2 neptunes). I plan on getting my left ear implanted within the next year so I can go with one Neptune then (though they are coming out with a swimmable Naida soon).

One month and one week post-activation

I got the pirate blue color. I haven't used my Phonak Naida hearing aid in my left ear since activation because it doesn't add anything except localization and the distortion (I have crazy recruitment) is enough to drive me mad.

    CI & HA decorations

I haven't decorated my CI yet because it is so pretty just the way it is.

    Finally!!!

My insurance covered 100% of my cochlear implant despite having a written policy that states that they don't cover CIs. Turns out that they do, no appeal needed. I paid $35 for the MRI co-pay and $150 for surgery+12 hour post-op observation.

One month and one week post-activation

On February 14th my Advanced Bionics midscala hires 90k cochlear implant with Nadia CI processor was activated. Immediately I could hear all sorts of things. I could hear voices and understand my husband's words even though it didn't sound human. I haven't had formal speech testing yet (that...

How it feels like to have CI?

I just had the CI surgery 2 weeks ago and won't be activated until next Friday (the 14th). Ask me after then and I'll have a good answer. Right now everything is so frustrating because I elected to have my better ear implanted since it had more constant access to sound. So right now, the ear...

Hearing Aids: What brands are best?

Depending on the level of your hearing loss you might benefit from any of the brands (for mild loss) or want to stick to a few brands with established high power aids (Phonak, Oticon, Widex, Siemens but mostly the first two). My hearing is at 100+ dB across all frequencies and I have Naida...

Need to STOP Cochlear Implant on Deaf babies

Yeah. I'm expecting educators not to be satisfied when Deaf high school graduates can read "To Kill a Mockingbird". Why should there be a bar that is different from hearing children? Why should it be surprising when ANY high school student reads Dostoyevsky? Access to these great works of...

Need to STOP Cochlear Implant on Deaf babies

Until Deaf education progresses to a point where Deaf children are EXPECTED to be on par or ahead of hearing children, not much will change. We all know that ASL is very different from written and spoken English but not being able to construct understandable sentences in written English is not...

Need to STOP Cochlear Implant on Deaf babies

I'm pretty sure that is false. I'll reconsider if you give some reliable source. Parents should have a choice about their children. Forcing or denying a CI is wrong.

    Question about CI...urgent

One scary thing for me as I approach my surgery date is music appreciation. My dad is a country/blues guitarist and my husband is a bass singer with choirs. The CI won't stimulate the bass region so I'm relieved that my surgeon won't to two implants at once. I want to see if the CI adjusts to...
