    For Hearing Educators

According to the parents I have spoken with, they choose spoken language so that they can model fluent language for their child. They want their children to grow up using the language of their home, family, and culture so that they can participate fully in it. They want their children to have...

    For Hearing Educators

The adults who teach in listening and spoken language schools. The adults with children in my program. The adults who become audiologists and choose to advocate for listening and spoken language. The adults who speak at Hands and Voices and A.G. Bell and at E.H.D.I. Those adults. Have you...

    For Hearing Educators

I don't know how many more times I can say this; it is not my choice. Your beef is with parents.

    For Hearing Educators

Your advice is to ignore what the adults tell me and what they advocate for because one woman on the internet told me to? What is your obsession with thinking that teachers teach because they think young children are cute? I teach because I am passionate about using research-based best...

    ASL and Deaf Culture

I specifically mentioned the cultural difference on public versus private information when it was mentioned. I found it interesting, but it showed that my assumption that ASL = Deaf Culture is wrong.

    ASL and Deaf Culture

This is a family with several generations of deafness. She has chosen listening and spoken language for her child's education but ASL is the family's home language. She calls herself D/deaf and her son hard of hearing. I was just very surprised that they didn't consider themselves part of the...

    ASL and Deaf Culture

I just bumped my post from yesterday because there was one of those "we are making an innovative product that will never come to fruition" posts above mine. No hurry.

Question about the name deaf and blind school

Was it the state school for the deaf and blind? Like "Maryland School for the Deaf"? or Just "The Deaf and Blind School"?

    ASL and Deaf Culture

I have a question that I feel would be best answered by members of the Deaf Community, so I am going to ask it here. As I have mentioned before, I am a teacher of the deaf who specializes in listening and spoken language. I currently work at a private listening and spoken language program. One...

Pre-school teacher to deaf, mute and hard of hearing

The best way to "teach" a child any language is by having fluent users around them. There is no need for direct instruction that way. You just use it in routines and they acquire the language naturally.

Yes we can. You are clearly projecting your issues with this Melissa on to me.

I haven't said anything nasty at all. You on the other hand have been condescending, dismissive, called me a liar and said you were stalking some other poor woman on Facebook.

Mother of 7 y/o Deaf girl

None of what you are saying applies to me at all. I don't have a child with an implant, my kids are too young to be in school, let alone an honor society. My first post was not about Geers article at all. I don't have to make anything up and I can't understand what your obsession with this is.

I have. I have even discussed my children here.

Mother of 7 y/o Deaf girl

The T is capitalized because that is the first letter of my username and the D is not because I teach students who are not culturally Deaf.

Mother of 7 y/o Deaf girl

Actually, several of them have learned ASL as adults. Some to communicate with Deaf friends, one to access language in large group settings. They all still choose to advocate for listening and spoken language for deaf children. I use the word listening because it is accurate. The students I...

Mother of 7 y/o Deaf girl

I believe in what works best for each person. I will fight just as hard for a family to have their child placed at a Deaf school as I would to have them placed in the mainstream. I don't choose a family's language or modality, that is not my decision. I am just here to provide excellent services...
