Oh and just wanted to say....My ex's mom was a hardcore unschooler and a ' terp. She said if her girls had been hoh, she would have done part time placement at a deaf school or a program. The issue with deaf ed, is that it is VERY specialized. You cannot " just teach yourself" like the way you...

Oooo. Yes Sign! Basicly bombard your son with everything. He's got speech down pat, so you don't need to worry about that. Cued Speech may help if he has ever had issues with reading. What I would do is contact your state's School for the Deaf. Maybe he could attend for a semester so he could...

Other Public Deaf Ed/Special Ed Teachers?

There are dhh programs. But yeah. CODAs and sibs of dhh kids as well as nonspeaking kids could benefit strongly

New here and to the deaf community

Welcome!!!! Yes, Scary to realize that we have hoh people who are almost 50, and who also didn't get to attend a deaf school or a dhh program. Breaks my heart that it was thought you didn't " need" sign. You are within friends. Been there and done that!

Other Public Deaf Ed/Special Ed Teachers?

Well the problem is that most mainstream teachers aren't well trained in deaf ed. Most dhh kids don't really get intense intervention with deaf ed. So instead of being one of those kids who is doing well but needs a terp or other mild accomondations they tend to underachieve academicly. Like...

    People Wanting to Date ….

I used to get dhh mainstreamed and oral guys who were desperate for girlfriends. Felt so bad, and kept wishing certain " experts" could actually talk to them instead of gushing about inclusion in all areas from their ivory towers

Other Public Deaf Ed/Special Ed Teachers?

Using Sign with kids with more severe developmental issues is very different from using it with dhh or even hearing kids who cannot speak due to things like trachs, apraxia etc. It doesn't mean that it doesn't help that population, b/c it DOES. But say you placed a kid with severe developmental...

    Mindblown with a parental decision

But why are some parents so resistant to giving their kids a choice and a variety of tools and experiences? That is what I'm asking. I' m not asking why this or that approach is more successful wit this or that kid.

Other Public Deaf Ed/Special Ed Teachers?

AWESOME!! So your focus is on dhh kids? Did you know most sped students could acheive on a par with typical kids? Yet they're denied this or that

Are you eligible for a CI?

Anyone experienced loneliness and anxiety being hoh or deaf?

I've often wondered how certain people can read threads like this, and then think that oral exclusive approaches can somehow cover all the bases. Why wouldn't you want to give your kid EVERYTHING? Including a strong social emotional community and sense of belonging?

Canada wants to start killing Children!

Yes, but even with that there are still very severe conditions that cannot be adapted to. Most can but if for example you saw a child with end stage Tay Sachs, you wouldn't be all warm and fuzzy. There are always exceptions. Unfortantly there are profound by any definition conditions

Canada wants to start killing Children!

Exactly. Severe terminally end stage illness is very different from 95% of the everyday health conditions people deal with.

Canada wants to start killing Children!

Also...the number of kids this would affect is very small. It would be rarely seen even in the pediatric nursing home population. Very luckily the extreme profound population is very small. Ever seen end stage Tay-Sachs? Heck it prolly would be rare even in the severe cancer population

Canada wants to start killing Children!

Again. It's the terminology that is freaking you out. There are sadly extreme profound conditions. Simply b/c it would exist for those rare conditions is NOT a slippary slope. One wonders if you read up on some of the extreme conditions if you would be so concerned

Canada wants to start killing Children!

Yes, you're right. The DB twins had more complex issues going on It wasn't b/c they were DB. I do think they need to be very very careful with euthsania. But euthsania isn't automatically anti abliest b/c there are extreme profound conditions that can and do cause severe pain or profoundly...
