Letting people believe I’m mute, when I’m not

I sometimes wonder if some hearing folks seem to think "Well you have hearing aid(s)...those amplify/make louder sounds so you BETTER be able hear! It's louder than what we hear!" Well... loudness/amplification != speech discrimination/comprehension!

Letting people believe I’m mute, when I’m not

There's a lot of debate about that... even here on AD... whether to disclose you are deaf before any interviews. One would kind of have to if the deaf person does not have 'understandable' speech or doesn't WANT to voice for themselves. It's trickier when it's a person like me.. grew up oral-...

What’s your opinion on corrective surgery?

Maybe but we all can answer to the last question of "am I selfish to want to NOT do the surgery?". A varied view and responses still helps the person.

    Person Below Me

I think it's close to 1/2 tank.. have to look tomorrow. TPBM-What's the longest amount of time you have been lost while on vacation or just generally traveling around your city/town?

Letting people believe I’m mute, when I’m not

Heh... how true. When I did the Launch Day thing (where us students showed off the work we did on our main project...) I somehow ended up defaulting to ASL when explaining the project to others even though my speech is very good. I defaulted sometimes in the classroom too to ASL... I'm not...

Ms. or Mrs follwed by first name still feels weird to me

If you're unsure... ASK the person you want to address what they prefer. (Same thing with pronouns if you are unsure of the gender). But in general... name... first name with people you are close with or are friendly with... Surname for business purposes. I don't think I have ever heard of...

A Thread About Absolutely Nothing! Part III

Alaska, Maine (Caribou ME on the maps I saw) and Seattle (high of 78, a bit cooler where my friend lives in WA). all three have been at least 84 and below during the day.

What’s your opinion on corrective surgery?

It's normal to feel scared about something unknown. It's not the same but felt the same way with at least the strabismus surgery I had... in my 30s. Worried that it would fail and the eyeballs would go right back to before (they haven't- 24 years and counting). The fact you've been...

Is it just me or do others have this problem

Ohhh yes... yep. I'm much like AlleyCat- profound loss but my residual hearing is... sort of better. I can catch some words but one on one is better for me. Forget any groups larger than 3 (the last two weeks have been rather trying with two different relatives visiting- one I hadn't seen in...

    Dialects

What Tetra said. But yes... as an example it's true in ASL (American Sign Language) there could be different signs for the same word. Off the top of my head- multiple signs for 'Birthday', at least two for 'hurt' (I learned there is a NC sign for hurt last year), several signs for 'Computer'...

Ms. or Mrs follwed by first name still feels weird to me

I have no idea.. I suspect that for some in Washington, it feels... "old fashioned" or stuffy I guess. I, and my friend, both see it more of a sign of respect. There are some who see being called "ma'am" as being referred to as "old" or "old spinster" as it were. English is funny that...

    Person Below Me

Noooo. I can sort of tolerate Orange jello... TPBM do you like grapes? (I like the green grapes; don't like the other kinds- red or purple or whatever color).

First date (I am fully hearing going out with hoh girl)

Be patient. Bring a pad and pen or something to write on at least (Boogie board for the win- when your niece notices you didn't bring it to the dinner outing.. - I forgot...:( ). If you are doing dinner, make sure there's enough lighting if she does lipread any. Quiet place ideal but that...

Two weeks? I hadn't realized it's been that long! Hopefully the remainder of the rescue will go a bit more quicker and safely.

Ms. or Mrs follwed by first name still feels weird to me

the las? Misslas? Miss las? Pretty much my thinking too. My WA friend says she has heard people use these terms and has been called Miss Cindy. She did mention that in WA the natives will be infuriated if you call them 'ma'am'... a bit hard to NOT say that if you were raised to...

    What’s in your toy box?

a new car-- thinking maybe not an SUV this time around. Pipe dream right now as no money, no job and the one I have still gets me places after 15.5 years even though it's butt ugly now lol.
