Sorenson router; how many computers can hook up

If this question has been asked before, I apologize for repeating it. Please direct me to the appropriate thread.

Here's my question:

Suppose someone as a Comcast modem, a Sorenson router, and one PC, connected together. Does the Sorenson router act like a regular router, too? That is, can additional computers be connected to the internet thru the Sorenson router? Or is it necessary to also connect a regular router to the modem?

I'm asking this for a friend, so I'm trying to do this without actually seeing my friend's set up. Also, I have Roadrunner, so I'm not familiar with Comcast's way.

Yes I believe so. It depends how fast internet can handle. My cable internet booklet said 10 computers can surf on internet at once on network. Maybe router itself can expand more computers with ethernet switch box. Router have only four ethernet ports that means for VRS?

How about adding just one more computer? That is:

modem + Sorenson router + (1)Sorenson equipment, (2)one PC, (3)one laptop

Yes, Sorenson router is same regular router. Any ISP company can hook with sorenson router to PC.

Yes you can I know router have four ethernet ports. That should be enough for you. Put ethernet cable between your computer and router. If you have wireless built-in in your laptop and put wireless router with ethernet plug in router or if you don't have wireless and then put ethernet cable between router and your laptop.

But i would rather to get wireless router. I'm not fan of wire around in house.

Theorically, up to 252 computers can be connected! That is if you know how to do that, and what the chance are you going to have this much computers and device hooked up at any given time?

Why it is theorically? simple put, the IP address pool on 192.168.0.X and X represent a number between zero and 254, Can not use zero or 254 because they are loop back IP address. then 1 is reserve for router this leaves 252 available NAT IP addresses. So in other word, the available IP addresses is from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.253.

Remember the simple rule, can not have 4 switches in same line.

Im not fan of wireless! I have done barged in someone's home wireless network, not even one struggle! Gee! I rather wired so I can physically see where it goes! Can't do that with wireless.

I would recommend you to purchase a wired router instead of a wireless router because of the speed. I personally do not trust a wireless router.

I have a D-link router that has 4 ports. My router connects two computers, share two printers, and a VP-200. It has one main line for the router to connect these ports. Hope that helps.

a main line to a cable modem (ethernet wire). The modem has a 2nd port that goes to a router.

(1) 1st computer

(2) 2nd computer with a printer

(3) my other printer connects my computer (I lost my USB cable so I use the ethernet.)

Same here, not crazy about wireless. I even have wireless router and I actually turned it into access point. Meaning only thing that would connect that wireless router is my laptop, if I dont use my laptop I turn off that wireless router and still have wired network running. I normally turn off because I trust NOBODY outside!

Also my friend was fan of wireless, he just start to realize that it is causing problems.. know what it is? More and more people in his neighborhood is using wireless and causing conflict and confusion already! He had neighborhood trying to force him to change the setting.. Man! I don't want go in that mess!

It's your responsible to set up the WPA2 or you are screw up.

Disable on SSID broadcast and put password on that and change the number on webpage.

No, wireless router don't bother me.

I'm in medium size of families then wireless router is for us, that where computers are in long distance from router, I'm only person to use wired to router since other members use wireless.

Sure! I know about this, but my point majority of people do not even know about it! Or had no idea that their security setting has been set back to open broadcast itself. You can't see it happen! With wires you can easily noticed if somebody messed up with your cables.
And finally these WPA2 STILL not 100% secured anyway! I have one of my friend who knows how, and he laughed when one thinks it is fool-proof.

Right now I got 22 ports in my house, and I can move my VP, computer anywhere around my house and still use up to only 10 ft Ethernet cable! My house is already wired. :-D

Thankfully, you and your friend don't live in my neighborhood, if so then I will make to across on restricted computer, that what Linksys offers for latest routers, that's impossible for hackers to crack down. WPA2 is most rarest to crack in, though.

Sheesh 22 ports in your house!? You sounded like one of my friend who hates wireless. LOL. I can use wireless Access Point (using 2nd Belkin router set to AP) and take VP100 wirelessly anywhere up to 50 ft, just need 3 plugs to the wall (3 way plug adapter) and bingo I'm on! (AP, VP100, 7 or 10 inches LCD monitor). So what's the difference wiring up Ethernet to every room or Wirless and have a home tour on VP.

I own a nice new home and I DON'T want to MOLEST it!! My laptop is in big walk-in closet by the window (on 2nd floor) on wireless. It downloads files at 650mpbs! and Cable modem & Router is in the basment (40 ft under the closet wirelessly).


I went over one of friend's home for voting contest on a laptop or pc. Had about 6 people on a wireless (including me using my lappy) and 3 PC wired on one wireless router. It ran no problems.

I learned that YOU can daisy chain wired routers and hook up as many PC you can. LOL. My friend have DSL modem and daisy chained his Sorenson wired router and Linksys wireless router. It works fine.


So back to point. ANY routers that have 4 jacks behind are where you can plug in Ethernet cables from 3 PC and 1 VP100 or if it's Wireless router, 3 PCs, 1 VP100 plugged in 4 rear jack and as many Wireless connections

I have fished the Ethernet cable though inside the walls, so wires can not be seen! I have some people coming over my place, and said oh my, it is nice and neat.

As many wireless connection, that is close, still up to 252 total in mixture of wired and wireless.

252 connection will never happen anyway, reason? they are all on shared speed, so the more computers connected, and if all computers upload/download at same time, it will slow down.

Yup, More pc's online, slower network it gets. OR unless if 3 PC downloading BIG files, Nework would slow down to crawl (done that before using 2 PC downloading P2P filesharing same time and my wife tried to log in Email on 3rd PC, she complained it's taking forever to get in! OOpsie!! I had to suspend two P2P download till she's finish w/ email.. Hee Hee)
