I was implanted two years ago and am now looking for a job and want to know what others use at their jobs to make their jobs accessible.

For example, using Captel or TTY/VCO phone, internet calls, instant messenger.

What type of job do you do, too? Did you bring up what you needed in interview or did they give it to you afterwards? Is everybody nice about it?

Thanks so much for any help!

As a new member you should really introduce yourself first before you post. So, since you haven't you should...but welcome to AD :)

We use instant messenger at work and e-mail a lot. I deal with customers face to face and I have trouble sometimes (I work as a p/t bank teller) I get someone to help me with the transaction. We have to do calls sometimes but as long as I write down who I need to call etc someone takes care of it for me. Everyone I work with are nice about it just the newbies sometimes are confused on why I never use the phone cause I have very good speech and most don't notice my hearing aids unless my hair is back/up. I mentioned in my interview that I had a mold hearing loss (which it was 4 years ago) now it's severe creeping to profound.

I had an ear infection before Christmas. The ENT Got the infection under control, but then I developed mold in the ear under the crap. That now seems to be under control. However the sound in that ear is much lower and distorted. Is this similar to what you experienced?

I use an interpreter for a meeting or important stuffs. I use ASL. I do communicate with my co workers by writing notes, instant message, body languages or some of them do familiar with my deaf accent to speak. I work with hearing people and they seem to be ok talking to me. I get use to educating them everyday. I don't have a CI. I work there for almost 15 years with the similiar positions but different 5 offices so far.

I have to deal with costumers all day! I work with hearing people, I do talk and I do my best to understand everybody, they just don't realize how hard is to get them when they talk covering their mouths or looking at the floor!

I didn't tell my boss I'm HoH... I really wanted the job! =/

I use a Captel phone at work. I told my boss that I was having difficulty understanding people on the phone so my employer purchased the Captel phone. I have an implant but I still use the captel beacause I have had the batteries for my CI conk out at least twice when I was on the phone. You can forget about using the phone with my unimplanted ear.

I work 1-1 with Deaf kids so I don't really have that many issues for work. I use email and TTY if I need to communicate other than face-face. I always disclose that I am Deaf but I often wait until the interview.

When I was working as a supervisor at a school for the deaf, I used a Cap-tel phone, a tty, a pager, a short wave radio, my voice, a computer, and, last, but not least, ASL or some version thereof, depending on who I was communicating with. Exhaustive list, eh?

did you know one of Breitling watch has short-wave emergency transmission?

see the big knob on right-bottom side of the watch? you unscrew it and pull it out. It will emit the emergency transmission for up to 24 hrs, I believe.

Breitling

a cool story about this - several years ago - a millionaire went out in hot-air balloon to fly around the world. He had a mishap during the flight and it plunged into sea. He had that same watch and he got rescued when a plane flew over. That pilot relayed the message to Coast Guard.

Ok, if you know what semaphores are, I dunno what else to say. So let's chug on in some other threads.

a semaphore is a protected variable or abstract data type which constitutes a classic method of controlling access by several processes to a common resource in a parallel programming environment.
