He's Not Black

He is also half white.

Unless the one-drop rule still applies, our president-elect is not black.

We call him that -- he calls himself that -- because we use dated language and logic. After more than 300 years and much difficult history, we hew to the old racist rule: Part-black is all black. Fifty percent equals a hundred. There's no in-between.

That was my reaction when I read these words on the front page of this newspaper the day after the election: "Obama Makes History: U.S. Decisively Elects First Black President."

The phrase was repeated in much the same form by one media organization after another. It's as if we have one foot in the future and another still mired in the Old South. We are racially sophisticated enough to elect a non-white president, and we are so racially backward that we insist on calling him black. Progress has outpaced vocabulary.

What do u think? Do you think we should follow the one drop rule which is probably outdated?

Obama is half white-half black, but strongly named as African-American.

He is only black if we follow the one drop rule which was created in the late 1800s. The author is saying that it is outdated so if we dont follow it, then Obama is not black.

Just wanted to know what you think?

i call obama half-black and half-white.

however, since he is half-black, he has every right to call himself african-american or black.

I disagree that word of "First Black President" on some newspaper. I like word of First African-American President" or "First Non-white president"

I don't care about the color of his skin or what race he is. Why should it matter ? *shrug*

it shouldn't matter, but since obama was elected as the *first* african-american u.s. president, it does matter and is very significant given the fact that this has never happened before.

Obama was treated as a black person all his life therefore he's black. Even though he's half white and half black, the public percieves him as black.

OMG! He's BLACK?! :jaw:

We got a BLACK leader?! :run:

:run: For your lives! :run:

( Who cares? So what if he is African-American, Black, Purple, or God-knows-what---why the continuation of fixation on his skin color? Good God...... )

I do not care about the color of his skin. I cannot believe some people are giving alot of big deal about whether or not Obama is Black or not today.

This thread should be merged with another thread.

Authentic s joke picture of Obama's face. Image of half-black skin on left side and half-white skin on right side of Obama's face.

thanks for the description, chevy. i don't know if i find that funny or not, but okay...

He's a biracial bicultural, and it should be the "first biracial bicultural president", not the "first African-American president" that's just my opinion. :)
