"big D" Deaf vs. "little d" deaf -- Continuation of Thesis Thread

You are correct. And, if your loss was due to the ototoxic drugs and the treatment you were given as a preemie, it is not a congenital loss, but an acquired one, as it occurred after birth.

Jillio,

Since my hearing loss was also caused by secondary complications of retinopathy of prematurity, does this also mean my loss wasn't congenital due to the fact that ROP is an eye disease that develops immediately after birth? Not that it really matters. I'm just curious.

Jiro you are Deaf if you say so.

I am Deaf Irish. That is a tough combination. :P

I think Jiro was a step ahead of ya.

The thread can be merged.

(poor jolie, seems like we are keeping her on her toes tonight) :giggle:

My apologies to Jolie. I didn't see sablescort's post about jiro's thread until after I created mine.

Even though I'm postlingually deaf, I suppose I could call myself Deaf since I've been accepted into my local Deaf community since 1995.

One can say they are "D" but they have to actually be accepted in order to be so.

Right?

Everyone we know besides our family is Deaf, and they are nice to us, so I figure I can count as big D.

Byrdie,

Would you mind clarifying this for me? If that's the case, then I'm not considered Deaf either way. I don't care one way or the other, but I'm just curious to know what makes someone Deaf vs. deaf. :ty: for any explanation you can give me.

A deaf person can choose to i.d. as Deaf if they adopt the values, concerns, ethics, and philosophies of Deaf Culture. A Deaf of Deaf is considered to be culturally Deaf because those are the values that were transmitted to them by their parents, grandparents, etc.
