A family practice doctor in Maine is refusing all forms of health insurance, including Medicare, in order, he says, to provide better service to his patients.

Dr. Michael Ciampi told the Bangor Daily News that he wants to practice medicine without being dictated to by insurance companies.

On April 1, Ciampi lowered his prices and posted the costs online. For example, an office visit in which patients discuss "one issue of moderate complexity or 2-3 simple issues" costs $75. When Ciampi accepted insurance, the visit would run $160, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The fact that Ciampi lists the prices, he says, means no surprises for his patients.

Say you're an established patient who can't make it to the doctor's office but wish to speak to him over the phone? A 10-minute conversation will run you $20. Each additional five-minute block will cost you $10. A minor surgery, like the draining of a boil will cost between $100 and $150.

Dr. Ciampi told the paper that some patients have left his practice, but that all seem to understand what motivated him to make the change.

Via the Banger Daily News:

Insurance companies no longer dictate how much he charges. He can offer discounts to patients struggling with their medical bills.

He can make house calls. "I’m freed up to do what I think is right for the patients," Ciampi said. "If I’m providing them a service that they value, they can pay me, and we cut the insurance out as the middleman and cut out a lot of the expense."

Ciampi told the paper that he collects payment at the end of each session (he doesn't send bills), and he sees each patient himself. Patients with insurance can submit their receipts for reimbursement, if the insurance company allows for that, according to Ciampi's family practice site.

Not surprised, insurance industry had made the procedure of payment super complicated and cuts too much corners. And VERY VERY VERY AUTONOMOUSLY.

The more complication the system, the more it cost $$$$, no wonder why American has one of the highest medical cost than anywhere in the world. Blame who? Its America medical insurance system and attorneys too.

If the health insurance were very simple system, I won't be in this mess, I won't have to go to court, I won't have to deal with finger pointing at somebody else while somebody else pointing their fingers back to the first one and so on!

I can see why Obamacare exists, but better need to be done. We need what we called streamline health care without anyone fuss up who pays for what shit.

For example, if your in car accident and were injury, you can NOT use health care insurance to cover that, you have to have go though car insurance to get the injury coverage. If your injury at work, you have to go though workers comp insurance to be paid for treatment, can not go though regular health insurance. If you lose your hearing aid, can not use health insurance, have to go though your homeowners or rental insurance to be covered for the loss and so on.

I have injury, where NO ONE wants to cover or pay for the treatment that I need. Reason? My Health insurance carrier refused to pay and blamed on my work, while workers comp carrier disagreed and refused to cover the treatment. I had to suffer MONTHS and MONTHS of injury where I could have had it covered long time ago and guess what? It is going to cost me dearly.

I don't want to share too much because I know it is not my former company's fault. They have done great job trying to figure out how to help me until the point where they were unable to help me. And few people knows whats going on.

The way America Insurance companies runs, it does more damage than good, and in matter of time people will eventually wake up and realize the serious of problems. Thanks to waves of lawsuits that had happened during 80's and 90's.

I don't think so, it is insurance companies that is stressing and scaring doctors away. Many doctors already told me and many of them refused to treat me all because of legal issues and insurance issues that they don't want to deal with.

Remember that I explained to you about my situation, it is STILL dragging on! UNREAL! At least my injury had improved but with limited treatment. Since it had improved which made it obviously that it is work related injury. I am out of work for 9 months already and this month was the best ever. Hope improvement continues.

We are on time bomb, unless better system comes up.

Interesting. will it be going to stress him or not?

Forgot to add this, I read one of article mentioning that more and more doctors prefers work for state like in prisons. Why? These doctors in prison don't require malpractice insurance, and doctor don't need to worry about lawsuit because state "Owns" the prisoners and state makes the decision what to do with prisoners not Doctors so meaning, if doctor made mistake, state is legally responsible for the mistake not doctor. Because of that, doctors makes more money that way.

I will try find the article and post it. Its been a good while ago like maybe couple years ago.

I see your point about doctors whose refuse to treat some people of the legal issues. jeez that is really SAD. I know doctors wants to help people but dont want to deal with the stupid legal documents . :(

to be more accurate - if doctor is going to get paid by a patient's insurance, he is bound by that insurance company's policy.

obviously - there's a huge difference in how a patient is being treated for depending on what insurance company he has. my health insurance is excellent. top notch. my friend's health insurance is crap. the difference in quality of medical care we both received is night and day.

yeah if it were way less than what insurance pays why not.

if a doctor truly cares about patients, then he would say screw you to insurance companies and be more flexible with payments but look around.... many doctors care more about their financial well-being than patients' well-being.

such a shame.

i know the feeling. such a pain in the BUTT to deal with the legal issue when they did wrong and insisted to pay. anywayyyyy

That is not necessarily true. Your health insurance has a contract with your primary care and that contract must be honored. There may be state laws involved at some level, but you can use either insurance for the visit and resolve any claim later. In fact, you should let the insurance companies fight it out because if you go through the other person's insurance it can hurt your credit rating.

Healthcare doesn't work like a free market, it's more like a monopoly because the government pays for medicare which is a major force of healthcare.

There are individual items driving cost(like tests patients do not need), but overall it is a system wide price affectation.

In the middle of this mess are doctors who are losing patients to high health care cost. It is unclear whether what this doctor is doing is helping or hurting because most people do not have the money for a full bill. If he could do partial insurance and his own cost on some thing it would be a better solution, I think.

oh that's a different issue.

if a doctor did something wrong... then there will be an investigation if it was a negligence or not.

for ie -

a doctor was drunk when performing a surgery = criminal
a doctor failed to check for allergy before prescribing a medication = malpractice and/or loss of medical license

No no, for example, if you are in car accident and injured in accident, your health insurance have right to refuse cover you, you have to go though car insurance to get covered.

If you had accident at home and broke your leg from falling on stairs, sometimes health insurance can refuse cover you.

You had no clue what I am going though at this time and see what kind of mess it has causing.

How many times have you seen sign in your doctor office that asked you to please report the injury that was caused by car accident or workplace injury? Once you report it, doctor will freak out and will back off, and asked you to see another doctor not them. That already happened to me.

Blaming on doctor directly? Do you have any idea of doctor average malpractice protection insurance costing them each year? You certainly can't afford it for sure.

because lot of doctors want $$$$$$$$$$.

Wow, what's extreme complication in American healthcare.

Very, very disappointing.

Yes I know. Dozens of my friends are doctors. And I've mentioned this several times in here before. But that is not the sole reason for high cost. It's also because they can just like I can charge high for my service if I want to.
