Am I the only one who noticed here on AD lately that the word "audism or audist" has been OVERUSED and OVERABUSED here????!!!

I feel that 90 percent of these who overuse that term simply dont know what it means but likes to throw it around casually. Now they throw that term around in EVERY situation that SEEMS to be AGAINST ASL.

I am damn sick of seeing that. I am tired of that label. I dont see anyone abusing the term ASL militant or whatnot. Why is it okay for others to make it seem like an evil word???!!!

Thanks for letting me rant and rave - I know that many would consider me audist BASED on my background but they would never give me a chance to explain myself, etc. I m just tired of that silly label. It seems like they are not creative enough to come up with another better or accurate label or whatnot. *steaming between my ears* Come on, guys, you can do better than throw audism or audist at anything or anyone that seem to be "against" your beliefs.

:squint:

Yep, I agree with you 100% on that.

My biggest beef is that it is a moving target in acertaining it's definition. It is the ole "let's throw out this word when the going gets rough" routine.

Ridor (ridorlive.com) called Tom Humphries an audist a few days ago.

I agree with you 100% It seems that for some people whenever *anything* upsets them the slightest, its always the fault of audists. If somebody disagrees with them they're an audist. If somebody dares to think differently they're an audist. Heck if they breathe too heavy they're an audist...its got to stop.

Trust me Mookie. I am quite sure that Endmion knows the history of Audism.

Gemtun, as usual, you are right on the money!

Rockdrummer,

I just ran AD advanced search. Endmion did not mention of an inventor of Audism until he brought up this thread. Correct me if I am wrong...

Gemtun, so what if you are an audist for a few reasons....

There is another audist as an oralist against ASL.
There is another audist made a decision to support C.I.
There is another audist made a decision for not supporting C.I.
There is another audist who sells hearing aids.
There is another audist who is a deaf hippie against hearing impaired politician.
There is another audist who is deaf blue collar worker against hard of hearing white collar boss.
There is another audist who researches for univeristy project that he/she perfers to work for mainstreaming school instead of state school for deaf.
There is another audist who has lots of hearing friends and refuses to admit that he/she is CODA.
There is another audist as an employor who refuses to hire deaf appliants but do not mind hard of hearing appliants who can easily answers the phone.
There is another audist who wants to marry intelligent wealth naive individual with hearing loss.
There is another audist who is gonna to kick vocalists' butts.
There is another audist who loves to play drums with a deafie giving salad tricks...

Yeah, I am audist for several reasons but so what...

I know my words don't mean much, but I agree with what's been said about the word "audist" being a moving target. If not everybody can agree on the exact definition, how can there be a productive discussion and debate? If people toss that word out there, not everybody's on the exact same page. Better to name the issue specifically rather than throwing out a label that frankly, is starting to look more and more charged almost like a racial slur. My dad has a saying: "Attack the problem, not the person." I think it's a good one.

Mookie, Go to my thread on this subject at http://www.alldeaf.com/showthread.php?t=26284 and you will see response from Endymion there. It is in that thread that I describe and post a link to Tom's creation of this word.

This is exactly why I started that thread http://www.alldeaf.com/showthread.php?t=26284
To get the definition out and hope that folks use the word in it's proper context.

Audism

I can understand where you are coming from. If you had been student at Gallaudet, NTID, CSUN, etc, been in deaf schools, been around long enough and then you will understand what audism is about.

It is same what blacks call white racists/racism.

It is same what women call men sexists/sexism.

Need I say more?

Get the drift?

Thank you!

I ll have to say that I agree with the first post. Its OVERUSED! It has been so overused that I freaking HATE that word. Everytime I see the word "audism" being used, I want to scream. I see it as the "race card" for deafies-

"Oh, i didnt get a job. Audism!"
"Oh, this person was an asshole. Audism!" etc etc.

You get the idea.

It serves no purpose except it pisses people off.

It Does Serve A Purpose!
