They offer more than 93,000 beds for these victims at this moment (new 1,000 beds per an hour). Nas and my uncle are two of them. Since Nas moved in with me, her apt is empty for several months now (one year-contract). So her place is perfect for one NO (New Orleans) family who will arrive tomorrow to move in for a while. We paid the traveling fees to get them over as well.

My uncle have two bedrooms which are available in Austin, Texas and I believe one NO family already moved in with him & my aunt. They brought them in.

Nas' parents soon will add to that list. They have one Sportsmen RV that sitting unused on their park space.

This morning, Nas and I donated several hundred bucks to Red Cross. We would donate to Red Cross few days ago but we didn't get the paychecks from our boss in Sweden until today. If anyone is able to help these victims (donate housing or donating some money), please help them out.

P.S. Look... I don't give a damn about politics at this moment so try and keep your politics out of this topic. Let's set aside our political differences and work together to help them out. That's what they need from us right now. Thanks.

I concur and agree that all the finger-pointing, blaming needs to cease and get help to these people.

I'm interested in information on 'groups' of people get together and go down there and willing to help out in any way possible, even the idea of helping maintain contact with other displaced 'deaf/hoh' people down there also is an idea I've been going over lately.

Thanks for the 'info', but it's not what I was looking for--being able to go DOWN there with a group, especially helping those who are deaf/hoh and even help in any way possible, such as; clean-up, etc....with the duration of being there possibly limited, yet, depending on a variety of situations, etc.,....

RR, that is very admirable... I wish I were still living in USA so I could join you in this effort. All I can do is donate what I have right now, with heart. I'll donate more when I have a little extra more next week.

It IS really heartbreaking to see those folks struggling after the proverbial rug was pulled out from underneath their feet.

I read a good post by someone else about many poor college students giving up the money for their meals for a day for the Tsiumai relief funds - it is a good idea for Katrina relief

Some folks are mailing canned food and clothes over, too...

RR - you may be interested in doing projects for Habitat for Humanity. They are accepting volunteers to lend a hand with rebuilding or building new houses.

That is very generous of you and your families.

I wish we could put up an evacuee family at our house but we are already sharing our house (temporarily) with another family. For now, we will make financial donations to Salvation Army and Water Missions International
( http://www.watermissions.org/ ). We are working on some other local aid.

I donated the last of my money to AmeriCares and NAACP for Katrina Relief. It's not much, but it'll do for now. I'm officially broke. :P But I'm glad.

I chose AmeriCares because I feel there is a strong need for free clinics especially for Katrina relief. I have read about a nurse having to break into a pharmacy just because medicine supplies were taking too slow and the need was immediate. Normal staff in nearby hospitals would be too overwhelmed to take care of all the sick ones. http://www.americares.org/

Quite frankly I'm disgusted by it. It took us more time to respond to this than it did to respond to the tsunamis. I realize that the magnitude isn't as great as the tsunami's but this is our country. We should be taking care of our people first. It took our president a whole tour through the devastated areas to sign a damn piece of paper to give a few billion dollars to start the effort. I would have signed that bill as the storm was hitting. I heard about nurses stuck in hospitals who resorted to IVing themselves to keep hydrated so they can take care of other patients. People have to pretty much swim through filthy water for 4 days. The response of the American people is impressive. We are extremely charitable as people but it isn't enough. Over 60 countries have offered their services to us. Even Fidel Castro himself has offered services from Cuba to send medicine and doctors to the worst parts of the disaster... A country that we've cut off trade from for decades is reaching out to us, yet our government takes 4 days to take care of our people. Those assholes up in Washington DC need to remember that they are NOT America, they SERVE America.

I am planning to take in one pet being a foster parent to pet until a place is set up for the pet and will find more information about it tomorrow. They are offer foster care for displaced pets that were rescued from hurricane katrina. I couldnt take a family or a person in since I dont really have lot money but can afford to take care of other pet beside my cat. I suggest some of you do that as well here more information.

If you want to be a foster family for an animal needing a temporary home in North Texas, call 214-651-9611 ext. 123.

If you want to adopt an animal - which would help make room for animals needing temporary quarters - call 1-888-ANIMALS.


The SPCA of Texas is reducing its adoption fees to $40 for all animals Sunday in order to help make room for animals needing temporary shelter after their owners were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. (Usual fees ranged from $80 for cats to $185 for small dogs.) To take advantage of this offer, call 1-888-ANIMALS or go online at www.spca.org for shelter locations. Shelters will be open Sunday from noon until 6 p.m.

The American SPCA is also helping out. The ASPCA has set up two databases to assist in the recovery of animals affected by Hurricane Katrina.

One database is for helping families find their lost pets. People who want to register a pet should send information and a description of the pet, including name and breed, to disaster@aspca.org <mailto:disaster@aspca.org>. People can also call in their information at 212-876-7700, ext. 4700. Pictures of lost pets are unable to be accepted at this time.

The second database is for people who would like to volunteer with the animal relief efforts. You can register via email at disaster@aspca.org or by phone at (212) 876-7700, ext 4700. Leave your contact information and special skills you possess to help with animal relief.

Over the past week, the ASPCA has received about $800,000 in donations to help animals affected by the hurricane. The board of directors has also allocated $250,000 for relief and recovery efforts. The association estimates it will cost millions to rebuild shelters damaged by the storm and to provide assistance to local companion animals.

Screw Red Cross and push Bush to accept the $ millions in aid offered by other countries. So far Bush has rejected the aid offered by other countries.

Making us send donations to Red Cross and similar orgs when other counties offered to fork more than what we can give is the same as..............STRANGLING AMERICA!
