Homework....

Suggest get a timer for your kid. .

Tell them to do as much they can for 15 minutes then take a break for 5 min then continue again for 15 minutes. .

This could help with their focus instead of easily getting overwhelmed and bored to work on it nonstop forever. .

I heard that its like a minute for your age that you have a total time for attention. .

Like 5 yr old should be able to stay with it at maximum 5 minutes, etc. .
Yea it'll be 60 yrs old to be able to be patient for one hour! ;)

My 5 year old gets easily overwhelmed with trying to clean her room. . But she gets motivated with timer for 5 minutes so she can try to beat the clock and get it over with. .

here School starts with 10 mins in K and about

30 mins in 3rd grade this year
and a few hours in High school but that also depends on the child my younger one gets 1 paper of 5 - 20 question depending on day and subject and 20 mins reading but the worksheet can be drug out for about 1 hour .
Teens get about 2 hours of homework but my teen gets done in 30 mins and really its done proper .

I personally feel that with going out at 6:40 for bus and school until 3 and daycare ( most KIds today ) until 7-8 o'clock and home and dinner that its jsut to long for daily home work , I think projects with greater grade value and longer time is better for today's families

From what I've seen with my nieces and nephews, it's almost impossible for a six year old to sit still and concentrate on homework for an hour. I would be frustrated too. Life is short. Kids need time to play with friends and burn off energy. Too many grownups have problems with balancing work and family time. There's no need to start this awful cycle in kindergarten.

It's time for 6 years old to start their first step to learn new things at their first school after 3 years in Kindergarten...

My both sons start homework at their first school... something like learn how to write neat way... a a a a a a b b b b b b c c c c c d d d d d d..... and read the book ... only for an hour...

It's good development for 6 years to start to learn something at new school which different as kindergarten. The children are happy to learn something new.

We really don't care what time we pick for my children but my children's choice. As long as they choose their time to done with their homework but they can't go out with their mates, sports or watch TV and computer games until their homeworks are done! TV and computer games rule in my house is from 3 pm... My hubby (my hubby stay home with children as houseman and evening work from 4.45 pm - I work full time from 7.30 am to 4.00 pm) support Alan with homework every afternoon after lunch because Alan choose afternoons. Danny do his homework in his bedroom (He have desk in his bedroom). My both children don't like homeworks at evenings/nights because they said that it make them feel tiring after go out with mates, sports, etc. Okay, this is their choice as long as their homework is done!

Dear ADers,

May I question you? I began notice that most of your posts saying that your children do with their homeworks at nights... It got me wondering what's time your children come home from school? What's time your children start school and end?

New starters (Grade 1) start school at 8.00 am and end in most 11.00 to 11.30 am.

2 Grade - start school 8.00 am and end in 11.30 am to 12.15 noon.

3 Grade - start school 8.00 am and end in 12.30 noon to 1.00 noon.

4 to 6 Grade - start school 8.00 am and end in 12.30 to 1.30 pm

7 Grade - start school at 8.00 am and end in 1.00 pm to 1.30 pm... 4 pm at Mondays.

8 Grade? :dunno: My both sons are Grade 4 and 7.

my son goes to preschool and does not do homework but most of times when hes in class to learn something like ABC and 1 2 3. Sometimes when I picked him up and i asked him what he did learn and he always said I know A B C then skip another letter that includes numbers. Its good thing for him to learn so it gives him easy to learn. Then sooner I am gonna to have to register for him to enroll to be in K next fall.. Let me ask what grade or ages in your state do they allow your kids to ride (first time) school bus?

Interesting ....

What I'm really asking is how long does it take your child to do their homework each nights?...Since every child needs to be in bed early during the school days...

Both of my sons get home from school at 4:15 pm, and my oldest gets home at 3....

Depends on your child(s) homework is heavy load or light load.. takes up hours..
during the night but advise best after the dinner or come home your child's curfew likely example 730pm or 8pm.. do your homework.. when it's done.. then have fun watch t.v. for 1 or 2 hours.. then their bedtime..
That's all I have do that my children.. depneds their homework heavy or light load.

I was surprised to hear that your son has homework and he's a kindergartener.. wow.. my daughter is in 3rd grade, this is how I do this with her. When she comes home from school, I let her eat snacks and watch alittle t.v. for about 30 minutes. Then she does her homework with no t.v. on. If I see her get frustrated, I let her stop and relax for a while and go back to her homework and I'd sit down with her and explain the part she doesn't understand. As far as doing the reading passage (1 minute reading), I let her do it before bedtime. I think that the kids should have breaks in between cuz they've been in school all day long and all they think is school. So its good to give them breaks in between and let them enjoy their evening.

^Angel^, your son sounds like my daughter. She gets frustrated really easy and has a hard time focusing on her work. So just try this.. when he comes home.. let him eat snacks and watch cartoon for 30 min. to an hour then go back and help him with his homework. Find something funny with him when he's working on his homework that can relieve some frustrations. if that doesn't work, try holding on to the homework til after he takes a bath then try again. you just have to find his feelings where he's most relaxed and go there. hope that'll help you with some ideas

to answer your question about how long it takes...

its very important to look at his School planner (if he have one) or look at all the homework he has before he does any. if he has a lot.. do like 1 or 2 pages after school.. let him take a break, and do others after bathtime.. it really varies on how much they have to do daily. my daughter has alot of homework every Mondays and Tuesdays so I'm prepared to split up the homework. the first half after school and the other half after she takes a bath.. When she has a few.. i'll try to get her to finish it afterschool..

as far as term papers, make sure your kids don't wait til the last minute. try to encourage your kid to do it early and 1 at a time. it would be very helpful.

middle schools and high schools are the hardest. more homework more frustration. Most of the kids usually do it on their own time. in Elementary, you just have to watch your kid/kids to make sure they understand what homework is about

LOL That's exactly what I do, when he comes home from school , let him have a snack before dinner gets ready at 6, he usually play games or watch cartoons on TV, I don't make him do his homework until after dinner, same goes for the others two, cause they need a break when they arrive home, unless they have a project that has to be due the next day, usually projects is given 2 weeks before it due, it's depends on what type of project, my little one has the package that send home on Monday which is homework sheets etc, then dues back on Thursday, but during the week, he has to know the words so he can learn how to read, he gets frustrated with them, even we pratice them everyday, he still doesn't remember those words even we just went over them before, and reading books to him each night for 20 mins that I don't have a problem with cause I can always do that when he is ready for bed, afterall he doesn't have to read them until he knows the words and be able to read the books....

My other two children seems fine with their homeworks sometimes they have more to do which makes them stay up past their bedtime, so I'm trying to get them to bed when it time, so if they have so much homework to do, I expect them to finish before it's time for bed....

how about making flash cards, sight words. you can write it all down and show him each word, let him say it and if he gets it right, put it on one side on the table if he get the words wrong put it on the other side and go over it with him what they are. then do the same the next day.

Fifth amd 6 ?
