Has anyone here ever had to deal with a rude and/or incompetent cashier at a store?
I have met one today at a local grocery store called Winn-Dixie.

My mother and I went to Winn-Dixie to grocery shop. I got 2 things to go pay for up at one of the cashiers' lines. Mom was behind me with a cart full. I also wanted a book of stamps and Mom said she needed some herself too.
Well, this guy got through paying for his stuff, but he was talking to the cashier. I got my keys out with the Winn-Dixie barcode card attached to it so I can get a discount for my purchases. After the guy was about to leave, I gave him my card and the cashier scanned it. Mom told me later that she saw him rolling up his eyes as he scanned the card. I told the cashier I like a book of stamps.....so he took one book and said in a sarcastic way, "And here is your lovely book of stamps." I looked over at Mom thinking, "Is this guy weird or what?" Mom shifted her eyes over to one side, and I looked at the boy and thanked him for the stamps. Mom said she heard him telling the bag boy and giggling "I will tell you later"...she also said the bag boy is very good -- didn't smile at him and just shut his mouth. I left with my purchases and a book of stamps that I needed.
It was Mom's turn....she told him she like a book of stamps too. He took a book of stamps and said in the SAME WAY he said it to me, "And here is your lovely book of stamps" and held it right in front of her eyes while she was trying to write a check. Mom looked up at him and said, "Will you hold it a minute - I am writing a check."
After Mom gave him the check, she told him, "You know that lady that just left? I know her and she cannot hear very well. I don't like it when you make fun of someone like that." The cashier said, "Oh, no, I wasn't making fun of her. I didn't know she couldn't hear well. It wasn't in my nature". There was a LADY who works there behind him heard the whole thing and she smiled and nodded when she heard Mom telling him this....so this lady obviously knew he was very rude to customers.
Mom said he made her madder when he shoved the book of stamps in her face while she was trying to write a check and acting silly about the stamps to her too.
I wouldn't be surprised if he's out of a job by early next week. :)

The majority of cashiers I've met were very nice or ok, but this guy was acting silly the way he was showing the book of stamps, and he did the same thing to other customers like my mother. Also, it was dumb telling the bag boy "I'll tell you later. Hee hee" in front of the public. It has NOTHING to do with hearing loss.....he was just plain rude.

 Yes, about 2 months ago, I was in the Kmart store with my husband and my foster son Tiger. Tiger wanted a Gameboy cartridge. So, I went and did my shopping, while the guys looked for a game cartridge.

When I was done, I go to the front of the store towards the checkout register, I see my husband and Tiger at the Customer Service desk. So I walked over, and the customer service rep. seemed very agitated about something, so I walked to over to where the guys were and asked what is wrong? The rep. said to me, I am talking to this man, not to you (meaning me), I told her, "I am with this man young lady", in the meantime, there was another rep, but, kept to herself. So, I asked her again what is wrong. She said I don't know what this guy is trying to say to me. Well, it turned out, that Kmart had a new system when it came to purchasing electronic games. Instead of paying for the games right in the department, with more shopping to do, the sales associate had escorted my husband and Tiger to the Customer Service Desk where they would hold the cartridge until my they were done shopping. My husband and Tiger were done, when they went back to the Customer Service Desk and had asked to purchase the cartridge, and now it's the time I spotted them. The girl kept saying to Manny when he asked to purchase the cartridge "huh huh huh", Manny was getting so aggrevated. I told the rep. "he is telling you that he wants to purchase the cartridge because now your store has a new policy that the games cannot be purchased at the department register anymore, and to be held at Customer Service. That is all he wants. Well, now the second rep. comes over and says to me, not to be upset with her because he wasn't speaking clear english. I gave her such a look and told her " this man is deaf, he does speak english, and the reason he doesn't speak clearly is due to nerve damage to the larynx". I told her you just discriminated this man by not treating him the same as you do the customers you can talk to that are hearing. She became upset, and said she was very sorry and didn't know he is deaf. We took our purchase once the process had been finished, and I suggested her that she take some sign languages classes or find classes for better functioning attitude classes. We then went to the other register, and spotted the manager go over to the Customer Service Area, and then came over to me and had asked me what had happened. When I explained how my husband had been treated and spoken too, he wasn't very happy and told me he would deal with it. He then asked me how he would sign "sorry" so I showed him and he signed "sorry" to my husband. I haven't seen the first rep. with the bad attitude since.

I have many times. As soon as I start raising my voice. Stores call the police in panic...

I bring my Wife shopping with me now...

I know I been thru it too. About 2 yrs ago, I went shopping and went up to the register to pay for my stuffs. I gave the cashiers $20.00 and I got back less then I was supposed to. I was missing $10.00. So I told this lady, "Hey I am short $10.00 so give me back my $10.00 and I gave you $20.00." She said no you didn't and I started to raise my voice YES I did. So without getting into farther problem and the customer was waiting for their turn. I walked away from her and went to Customer Service and explained to them. The Manager took care of it for me. What the manager did was she told the Cashier to go work somewhere else while the manager took the cashier tray with her and she counts the money in the tray and found $10.00 over limit. The manager gave it back to me and she gave me 2 coupons for a free soda. I thanks her and was so happy. The manager was so sorry for what happened. Then I left and I saw the cashier and waved my $10.00 at her and said you are a thief. The cashier wasnt too happy at all but later I found out she doesnt work there no more. I guess she doesnt steal money from pp. I walked out of the store happy.

Wow, the more of the reasons to have a cheque/debit card, the cashiers can't shortchange you! I am so used to my debit card that I rarely see any of the real money nowadays.

I rarely have had any cashiers give me bad attitude. If they said something, I just smile and say "Excuse me, but I am deaf, and I can't read lips very well." Their reactions range from just grinning and being silent, to animated gestures like everything's ok? (F handshape in air???) good! (thumbs up) then smiling. It's just meaningless smalltalk, but sometimes it's fun to see how cashiers react to your deafness. In Utah, many young people take sign language courses in their high schools, so sometimes I am taken aback when the cashiers or waiters start signing to me.

I have experienced several times when the cashiers gave me too much change. Once I got like 20$ over, so I told the cashier out of honesty that she gave me too much money. She was like oh! And took the 20 dollars back. Don't want to feel guilty as a thief to walk off with extra money thus not having paid for anything.

wow, I´m sorry to hear what you all had through out. Why can´t you report the manager with complaint over cashier´s rude behaviour?

I haven´t any experience like this. :dunno: It´s their duty to be friendly to the customers.

yeah been there done that...funny enough I work at front end along with cashiers...At least they are not rude so far at where I work. Whenever we have problem we always page manager to the front end instead of try solve problem with cashier over money or items...So best way is talk to manager if you have problem with cashier....

Hi All,

Rude people have a tendency to be rude to everyone. Sometimes they are even more rude to people who are deaf because their voices sound slightly different than others who speak. I see this type of behavior from time to time.

Whether you are deaf or hearing, the reaction is usually the same as we leave the store

"What an asshole." or "What a bitch." --or for you clean people out there like me "What a jerk."

Do me a favor. First rule is to purchase something at low price then bring your kid back for #2. She can not force you out again since you already purchased it. If she does complain again, ask her what's the phone number of Better Business Business in the state and food/beverage taskforce of county government. If she still motormouths again, ask her if she can provide you a businesscard for legal matter. I do not think that she would contact enforcement officers since she is afraid to get terminated or lose her business becasue of her bad reputation.

That's how my system worked. I called Thai restaurant for carry out via Relay Service, but the manager hanged up. I was streamed and wondered if he was busy? A while later I came in and nobody was at any table. Moreover, I calmly ordered and paid fully. I yelled at him that why he hanged up and where the flaking are people at tables. (Well, I talk better when I curse). He could not kick me out since I already paid. A month later, I called thai restaurant and he was happliy to accept my order...

Not always...you may not be lucky if customer is with someone else. Therefore, you can not win this one.

U're right but that time a specific person was talking too fast, and ofc I apologized and remind that person and everyone in my line all the time that I'm deaf and can read lips some, then that customer it's ok then talk behind my back, lucily my supervisor was nearby and heard what that customer said, supervisor wrote the note to me what cust teased me, basically I cancelled that person's transaction and told the person not to tease any deaf person including me so asked to leave the store immediately, supervisor backed me up too by repeat the specific customer to leave and never come back, few people in my line clapped...
