Hi, I'm Taric Alani. I'm here, in my room, using American Sign Language, but you may notice, this time, I'm not voicing. The reason why is a lot of people, in the Deaf community, prefer sign and voice separate. The reason why is English and ASL are not the same language. For example, word order is not the same, so my blog will still have voice, but it'll be separate from the sign. In my first blog, I discussed scam in Nigeria, because my videos are not available there. A lot of scammers get the IM screen name or e-mail of a Deaf person on deafVP.com and vplist.com, and they try to steal money from them. How do they do that? They send counterfeit money orders, and a lot of times, the Deaf person completely buys it. Don't believe their mendacity! Please, if you have IM name or e-mail address on there, please remove it. I watched your video...did u voice while signing even though u said voice and ASL will be separate?

I used to voice and sign at the same time thinking my signs were in ASL until my brother told me that by voicing or mouthing the word compromises the structure of ASL making it follow the English structure. He advised me to not to move my mouth according to form the English words so I stopped doing that. It worked cuz it helped my mind to think more and more in pictures in which filtered to my expressive language. I still have a lot of work left.

Also, I have a more appropriate sign for "buying into it"..When I get my VP fixed, I can show u if u want.

I'm so sorry. Sadly, Deaf people are not their only victims. Interpreters fall into the same thing.

The scam goes like this. A man who claims to be a Christian missionary with a Deaf wife says he's coming to the United States and needs and interpeter. The rest of the scam is the same. Sadly, many interpeters have fallen for it.

Actually, I recorded the voice after I finished signing. The reason you may have that conclusion, is because I recorded it twice and spent a great deal of time timing the captions. The reason I provide a voice-over is to make the video accessible to Hearing-Blind and Dyslexic viewers. It's also useful for Hearing viewers that prefer to listen to the voice rather than read the captions, such as begining readers or learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). For example, did you see when I voiced, "Don't believe their mendasity!" There is no way I could have SimCommed that with the signs I chose. LOL

I'm thankful that I had many people who wrote to me from the Deaf community to change my VLog to ASL with a voice-over, instead of SimComm, for that specific reason.

To preserve ASL word order, it's important not to voice. (The exception to the rule is rehersed SimComm, because you can tweak exactly what you want to say, to make sense in both languages.) However, you should still mouth. Yes, there is a difference.

When I use Spanish VRS, I notice that, even though the Hearing person is using Spanish, the interpreters lips do not match. I asked one Spanish VRS interpreter, "Why do you mouth in English?" The interpreter said, "No matter what language, you always mouth in ASL." The interpreter offered to mouth in Spanish, but I asked her to continue to mouth in ASL, because I wanted to see true ASL including mouthing.

Case-in-point, ASL mouthing is always necessary. You must mouth the words in ASL word order true, but it is necessary to mouth the words. For example, some signs have no difference in sign, except for their mouthing, such as SEX and GENDER. We have a sign specific to Illinois, for the Dominicks grocery store. The sign is the exact same as DICK, except the mouthing is different. It would be very embarrasing for someone to think you were going to get something to eat from dick!

I would love to see that! Have you heard of Trix Bruce? She's crazy, in a good way, and I love her sign. She was teaching semantics in her DVD, ASL SEMANTICS. In one part, Trix tells a story, where a boy tells a girl a tall tale, and a she bought it. The sign I used is exactly the same.
