Hey Y'all,
I'm a hearie who worked with a young man in his late teens in a psychiatric hospital many, many years ago. This kid was great! He was spirited, full of energy, pissed off all the administrators and just happened to have an 80% hearing loss in both ears. Unfortunately, this was back in the mid-80's and there were no resources (interpreters, adaptive technology, etc.) for him while he was hospitalized. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what a challenging and difficult situation this was. Many of the other teens would make fun of his speech and, subsequently, get their asses kicked. This young man was fearless and never backed down from defending himself!
When he was released from the hospital, he began attending a residential school for the deaf. I've been doing some reading up on the "day program vs. residential school" debate. As a future special educator who will most likely be working with students like this teen, I'm curious if anyone has strong opinions one way or the other about which type of education they think is most effective.
