Hi deafdyke, no HA's aren't covered here. They were, back long before I was born, but the ammount the govt pays in subsidy hasn't kept up with inflation, so now ony 3-10% of the cost is subsidised. You can see the audy for free, but have to wait almost a year in some places. If you need to see one sooner, you have to pay private. If you are on a benefit (welfare) then you can get a loan of up to $1000 for HA's, but you have to pay it back of course, and you have to have seen the audy first ($). If you're working, or not working but your partner is, then you better have kind bank manager, and some disposable income! HA's in NZ cost maybe $500-$4000 NZD each (That's $250-$2000 USD each) and there's not much choice. We don't get all the options you have in bigger countries. Most things that are prescription, or treatments, etc, are covered here by govt, but not really HA's. Only little children, elderly, veteran's (who are also usually elderly & male), or accident victims (usually men with NIHL) get them paid for. If you're not elegable for cheap bus pass (ie old or child) then also not elegable for HA's. These friends are all women between 19 & 32.
Most of these people know they can't afford anything but the basic kinds, so don't bother going, that's why I asked. I had suggested that maybe the cheaper ones might still be worth getting, but they have all said that they don't believe they could be, or why else would new expensive ones keep coming out (Um, to make lots of money for HA designers/manufacturers?) It's hard. I was lucky to get mine since I was studying at that time, so got a special deal on mine & cost me less, otherwise I would have had to settle for cheaper than I have too. I would still have got whatever I could have afford, they help so much, especially since I have to lipread many of interactions with hearies.
Stupid thing is, these are mostly young people, who could earn more and pay for HA's in future, if only they had HA's now to get them started... GRRRRR! How do you encourage someone to just try anyway? They can always change their minds, yeah? Maybe I should leave it alone, since one at least, seems to have very defeatest attitude, almost depressed. It just frustrates me to see friends struggling and bitter but not thinking it's worth trying to do something for themselves to try.
I myself use what I can get now, and know that as I earn more, over years, as I progress, then I will be able to afford what I want, not just what I can get. Not a common attitude though. Maybe I'm really weird! LOL!
