I create a new thread because I notice that we are interesting to know anything about their lifestyle.

Opal´s post

I was fascainted to witness the Amish and the way of life they lead in Canada and USA, and ride a horse buggy and watching them sew patchwork quilts, and homemade things, I was lucky to sit next to them in a cafe and noticed they don't wear any jewellery or buttons. Very beautiful to see them in real life.

Yes, I do beleive you. I can image it could be fascastic to witness them in real life than watch TV document about them and also true movies as well.

I would love to stay Amish´s country for the weekend to learn their lifestyle/culture.

I have seen many Germans from old Tradition acts like this.

I don't think they are envy of us as they look us with a pity that we have no time for God, and we are living in dangerous world, etc.

I am not saying that all but some feel free from Amish lifestyle. How do you know that they are not envy of us? We all including Amish and beliefs who accept to live in dangerous world like this but we all choose right and safe environment to live like what Amish choose right and safe place to live.

I have read many Amish Histories and document TV... I must say that I´m glad to not living at Amish´s life. Not all Amish are happy... Depend on different person who are happy or not.

Look at every beliefs like Christians, JW, Muslims, Roman Catholic, etc who have time for God and have different belief as Amish... They accept real world like this and cope with it. They are happy what they are as Amish people as well.

I don't think its Parent's job to choose a bride/groom for their children, as its up to each individuals to pick their own, as long as they must chose same religious as them, otherwise they will shunned them if they married outsider.

I withness some of true movies about them. Their life as Amish is not easy as what we thought. Sure, we are being fanastic by their culture but for them? :dunno:

Yes, marry outsiders are not accept to Amish´s culture. Amish children who want marry outsiders will disown by their own parents and Amish people.

Few outsiders fall in love with Amish girl and want to join Amish´s life... One of movies I saw, outsider, who give up everything to start Amish´s life because of that girl... Amish boys made fun of outsider because he didn´t use to work hard as them... It took months to realize that they are too different so outsider left Amish´s country to go back his own life. Heartbreaking story.

The children are being teach to work at fields, etc at early age... Work, work, work, all their life... They are self-employ people...
They beleive to leave school an earlier to work for their parents. A boy help his father at field and a girl help her mother in housework, etc. until they are married.. Most of Amishs married at early age and produce a lot of children.

I saw TV document about German scientist who tried Amish life with his family for 3 months at old wood hut... etc... walk many miles to market to sell their homemade foods..., field, use horse bubby... After 3 months over, they were being question by Reporter... They said that they can´t image to live like this rest of life, wegen cold weather... no phone call... emergerny call...? German Scientist said he don´t mind to live at Amish ways except his wife and 2 teenagers...

Amish people doesn't care how they looks.. *Wise their $ budget*

Yes I agree with you.

I have seen many farmer from old Tradition who acts like Amish, help each other with lands and build the house by their own. They help each other ... budget as well.

Hey what about Amish males that still control Amish females? They stripped women's rights. The fathers make their own decision which young men to marry their daughters. It is still out there. I believe that you will go back and teach women to gain their rights.

Yes I remember from TV document about them.

Amish man beleive to be head of the family because he is work man who takes care of his family and his wife stay in the house to take of children, housework, cook, etc. like old fashioned way.

If Amish children love each other and want to get married but they have to ask their parents for permission first. The children must do everything what their parents do.

I can tell from TV document that Amish didn´t know what "women´s right" is but they beleive that way of old tradition is husband is a master in the house and wife is housewife and take care of children, housework, etc.

No... Young Man fall in love w/young woman and have to ask permission young woman's father for approval incoming forth marriage? If Young woman's father would say approval... Go ahead....

Change it lot little bit as bend.. espically Amish would not allow social relationship as outside partner. They'll disowed you immeditily because you're relationship w/outside partner. Rarely Amish willing accept Young Man or woman have outside partner in the marriage... Honestly RARE!

I met my deaf friend who is amish and married w/outsider partner. Amish's parent accept reason due Deaf hard to find another Amish Deaf in their area..
They got wonderful 3 children are part of Amish and outsider....

Beautiful!!!

Yes, Long time ago.. Amish force man to marry this woman... which it's very OLD fashion traditional... Amish Parent have to understand thier own siblings feelings. Amish people are not allowed contact outsiders for likely talk, and others... FACT Yes, but it's anymore... Amish people are allowed talk w/outsiders. Goes good Blend all together welcomed open.. Wonderful hearts they are... It's GOOD NEWS!

Depend where location area...

I like Alymer area but have not visited at ST Jacob yet. (one day)

wow interesting...

I often see on TV documents and movies about them... but I rather to see them in real life and experience their life... We don´t mind to stay at Amish´s country for the weekends to experience their life and taste their foods, etc.

Amish don´t like to mix their children with outsider children at school... They have one classroom for Amish children only until 8th grade. They do not beleive any Techonloy things, education, etc but leave school early to do for their parents.

I remember when I lived in Illinois... my friends and I were cruising around the Amish town.... down in the country.. we saw the old car for sale.. we were puzzled.... they dont drive any auto.. they drive buggy and horse..

We stopped by and looked at the old car... young lad came out of the house... we questioned them about auto for sale and we thought the Amish family are not allowed to drive any car... that lad explained to us it is their culture all 15 yrs old boys can have a car and go somewhere to "sow the wild oats" for one year...then returns home... get ready to get married and settled down at age of 16 yrs old..
We understood.. wow their cultures.. it was interesting..

Yeah very few lad had left Amish homes... and they are shunned... even tho if they return home they are still shunned... depend on Leader s decision... same with girls..

Rumspringa - prior to that, there is a period called "rumspring" during which Amish kids can partake of the worldly life. They have parties that sometimes involve drinking and (drugs). They check out the youth culture of their time!!!

Some even get cars. Obviously, the majority of them get through Rumpsringa with their faith and value intact, and enter the church. But some do stray into "English" life and are subsequently shunned.

The Amish label us as "English", "World" and "Yankee" as outside world.

Their home language is SwissGerman and speak English with outsiders.

There is two religious Amish and Mennonites, Mennonites are not all Amish. If you see them drive a car or even using cellphone, they are mennonites as some are using electricity in their households.
Modern Mennonites are very open to new technology and contact with the world around them. The Amish tend to shun technology. They do not have electricity in their homes, use the horse and carriage for transportation, etc. However, some groups of Amish do permit use of technology for work or business purposes, or as long as it is not brought into the home. Community telephones used by Amish neighbors have been common in the past. Today, one can see Amish in a horse and buggy using a cell phone. Theologically, this allows the Amish to keep technology under their control and not be controlled by the outside world.

There are several Australian Mennonite Brethren, very similar as Mennonites, all women wearing a scarf, long skirt, I can spot them in the street/supermarkets, and most of them know Auslan Australian Sign Languages, as one of my friends was disowned by his deaf Brethren Parents at the age of 16 because he don't want to follow their religious. There are lots of deaf inheritance in this family. He is the sixth generation of deaf in his family!!

Its sad to know there is a genetic defects in Amish family
Scientists discover genetic defect responsible for devastating brain disorder among Amish babies

Davidson College: WWW Homepage Template for Biology Students

Off topic to tell you all

My husband went to work for the Brethren, and he and his workmates leave a car radio on as a company while working on-site with Brethren, they came and asked my husband to turn this radio off because it is against their religious!!!

Yes, both of them boys and girls

Yes, you are right that Amish children married at young age

If they want one, its their choice.
But what if Amish boy fall love with one of outside girls?

He will make a decision to stick with his religious or gave up and join with this "English" girlfriend(s)

If they don't envy of us, why are they happy to stay there as Amish/Mennoties and not join us in the outside world?:)

WOW! It is really intersting to read those posts. :)

I did met Amish family once. We got Jack Russell Terrier from them. They were so friendly and so cooperative with us. :) The kids were so cute..last time they had 6 kids. :eek3: LOL!

They ride a horse buggy, I don't see cars.

They wore simple clothes. Nothing are too fancy. House look nice but not too fancy, just simple. I think they got 2 barns, one for animals and other one I am not sure.

I noticed the father had long beard. Girls and mother wore 'funny' look hat. I don't mean to say 'funny' but I don't know what it is called for Amish's hat is. Bonnett?

I heard the Amish food are amazing! I gotta to try that! I even found one recipe for Amish meatloaf. OH MY! It is soo good! I would have to go to Amish area and go shopping etc. :)

I have seen the real life of amish and it was in Lancaster, PA. It was very interesting to learn about them.

I also saw a bunch of teenagers amish changed into our clothes and hang out the outsider at the mall. :eek3:

Amish is very interesting....I am wondering if anyone here has Amish bread receipt? I remember that we pass the receipt out to one another to make bread...

I lost the receipt and sure miss making them! ;)

In summer 1987, my deaf friends and I rode on Amtrak train. I happened saw an Amish young lady at the cafe for bought something foods. She wore amish white bonnett and plain heavy dress. She was very lovely and untame. Very interesting to see amish people like this. I remember saw a movie "Witness" about amish boy and mother with city cop man. Also, other movie about amish, I forgot the name of the movie.

My elderly friend once was dating with an amish girl for a bit time and her father told him, if he wanted her for a marriage, and then he must grow his beard first before accept his prospal her for marriage. So he declined his suggestion and married other lady. Interesting.

I know what you mean! I will find it and I know I may have it.
