Are there really HOH and Deaf Police Officers

I've ask this question on a few threads a few times but never got any response, but really I'am so curious.

What do Deaf Police Officers do?

They really hire HOH Police Officers?

Maybe down in the US, but up in Canada I don't know if that's allowed?
 
Yes there is a deaf policeman down in US. i ll chech which state and town and get back to you! :)
 
I have no clue, really. I am not 100% familiar in that field. I hope there's someone from this AD who could answer to your questions. :)
 
Visalia, California, Richard Bean, the first and only Deaf volunteer police patrolman in the United States.
 
I don't know anyone who are deaf or hard of hearing are police officers, to be honest I wanted to be a police officer several years ago, but I found out I couldn't work on the streets, Only at the police department doing paper work or working at the crosswalk signal, I don't like that idea. I rather to get behind the wheels of the police cars and get those bums off the street, or work with wide variety of people everyday on the street. But you know that way impossible because I can't hear if someone comes behind me with a gun or any type of weapon.
 
When I started with my department, there was a HOH officer who wore hearing aids. He was an excellent guy to work with but he'd always scare the heck out of me (like not answering on the radio when I called him...the radio is our lifeline and when somebody doesn't answer, the first thought is that they are in trouble and need help). Over the past few years, what was left of his hearing became worse. He made the decision to go to 'light duty' until his retirement. This meant remaining at the station and booking prisoners and a lot administrative stuff. He just retired from the department a few months ago.

I do not know of any people who are deaf and then become officers...at least fully sworn officers. I'm not saying its impossible because I'm sure it is somewhere. I just know how much I rely on my hearing to do my job..from listening to the radio to standing outside of a door during a domestic dispute to listen to whats going on before knocking.
 
Cool but I used to work for the police dept but it all in the office work thou. I had a phone call one day and there was an emergency. Boy oh boy I had to transfer the call to the front desk. Imaged me answer that call and send out the help. :jaw:
 
I mentioned in another thread that my ex-husband has a Deaf man in his company as a corrections officer. I also found out he is a Caption and a member of the S.O.R.T. team which is their version of SWAT. I think that is really cool!
 
Hi everyone, I'm new here. Medically, I am deaf, however, I speak and hear very well. I am in the process of the police officer position with Miami-Dade, Broward Sheriff's Office, and Gainesville Police Department. I will update you as I go along the process. I have heard that there are several deaf police officers but have no idea where.
 
Not that I know off... but I do know someone who is planning on applying for a position in the police department.

I know two people who work for RIT Public Safety (formerly known as Campus Safety) that are HoH. :)
 
my Uncle is police officer for correction he hearing but i love him very much he side of my dad's and he very work harder and earn money what he wanted for?
 
A friend of mine from the college told me that she met a nearly deaf (like 80% HOH) cop. That deaf cop works on the street with a hearing partner. Which it interests me to become a cop. Well, I'll see what I can do in future...

BTW, can the deaf cops work on the street? I hate to work under desk....

Uh…no offense, but I just don’t see how this is possible. I am profoundly deaf on one side of my head with no residual hearing whatsoever. I have normal hearing on the other side of my head. I’m ineligible to serve in any capacity whatsoever with the Defense Department—even a noncombat support position. I just don’t see how it is possible that you can qualify for the job you’re describing. Are you actually telling us that you are training for a position as a fully commissioned peace officer with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and that nobody in command has an issue with your application? There must be something you’re not revealing, although I would be more than happy to be proven wrong. Also, I find the following statement a little puzzling (bolding mine):

Could you expound on that a little bit?
 
My wife used to be Quality Assurance Inspector or Quality Control Inspector for Dept. of Defense in CA from 1978 to 1986. And she was able to go into military base with top secret clearance no problems. She was the only deaf in entire D.O.D. in CA for QA inspector or QC Inspector. But i have seen a video about deaf man who volunteers to be police officer cruise patrol with hearing partner in few years ago i think....
