www.whec.com - Deaf community asks for better police communication
Members of the deaf community got a chance to express their concerns to some Rochester Police Officers.
Some of the people who came to the forum say being deaf is a disability that requires special attention, and they don't feel like they're getting that from RPD.
More than fifty people showed up to share their opinion about being deaf and dealing with police. Some suggested hiring a deaf RPD officer, to better facilitate communication.
Others expressed frustration that RPD hasn't done enough to accommodate the deaf community. The Chief admits the breakdown in communication is challenging.
"Many of those individuals may have unique stories of frustration, things that may have happened to them when they were contacted at some point perhaps by an officer, and once again, I think our greatest resource is being able to communicate," says Chief David Moore, Rochester Police Department.
Moore says the way they've handled communication with deaf people so far, is by having interpreters on staff. He also says every officer and recruit gets an intense training on deaf awareness.
