IOL: Deaf, dumb girl raped

A deaf and dumb woman was raped, allegedly by two men in Butterworth on Saturday morning, Eastern Cape police said.

The 20-year-old grade 11 pupil from Gauteng, on holiday in the area, was accompanied to her family's house following a party in the Bungeni informal settlement, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The friends left her in her room with her family. Around 4am two men entered this room and forcefully took her to a shack where they took turns to rape her."

She told her friends - using sign language - who took her to a local police station.

"A case of rape was opened with the assistance of one of her friends who knew sign language and interpreted," said Manatha.

He said the perpetrators were known and their arrests were expected soon

Yep, we are still being labeled as deaf and dumb. I cringe whenever I see it. It is just so degrading!

No.. it's the fact that deaf people are still labeled dumb by media even after all the fighting to make it known that we are not dumb.

ANd obviously you didn't read the article.. her friends brought her home to where her family was staying.. AND 2 men entered the room and forced her OUT of the room. She didn't go back to her room with strangers. Read the article again.

How DO YOU know she is with someone? Is she alone in room? Or does she being take after her friend drop her off and she walk to house? That details doesn't tell ENOUGH.

Yea and comments like those make women refuse to report their rapes cuz they are already feeling ashamed of it. People's comments like that will just only make it worse. Need to stop saying things like.."the woman should have done this or that...." Rape is NOT something to be taken lightly.

I really feel bad for the girl. I hope she is getting proper services since it is another country and all.

Strongly dsiagree. I know this post is so old. But, your quote is really meaningless. Absolutely meaningless... It is not matter if she is with someone or just go outside alone, any rape is never justified. It is not matter if she is drunk alone, or she dressed herself as a sort of gorgeous woman, or even she is half-naked, real men don't rape. No one should feel fear of being raped outside alone during day or night. Anybody should feel free to go outside and have a good time.

I can't believe people blamed the girl for just went outside alone instead of that rapist...
