MCTC foot bath draws a broad response

A Minneapolis Community and Technical College proposal to install foot baths for Muslim students provokes action at the Legislature and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities board.

By Jean Hopfensperger and Dan Wascoe, Star Tribune

April 18, 2007

Phil Davis, president of the Minneapolis Community and Technical College, never expected his "plumbing issue" to become a national controversy.

However MCTC's plan to install foot baths for Muslims has prompted reaction from both a state legislator and the board overseeing Minnesota colleges...

"I didn't expect a plumbing fixture would become a board issue or national news," Davis said.

The foot-washing proposal sprang from an incident last year when a Muslim student slipped and hit her head while trying to wash her feet in a sink in a bathroom, MCTC staff said. There was also the potential hazard of slippery floors for other MCTC students because of the water that spilled on the floor ...

MCTC staff said foot-washing facilities are available at colleges ranging from Stanford University, the University of Houston, Boston University, St. Cloud State and the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

In 2001, St. Cloud installed a bench and some ground-level faucets in a bathroom-sized room in the student union, said Ed Bouffard, interim director of the student center at St. Cloud State. The idea was to prevent puddles of water and slippery floors in the other restrooms, he said.

The facility, paid for by student fees, generated no controversy, he said. Most days, a handful of people use it, he said. But 30 to 40 people use the facilities on Fridays, the Muslim holy day. About a dozen Christian groups also use the student union for activities, he added.

"We're very happy to be part of a solution," Bouffard said.

A visit to the MCTC campus on Wednesday showed a major reason for the foot-washing facilities -- there are 500 Muslim students among MCTC's 8,000 total. Hundreds of young women, covered head-to-toe in traditional Muslim dress, can be found in the classrooms, library, computer labs and across campus...

Board member Cheryl Dickson said a foot-washing accommodation for Muslims at MCTC "is a safety issue and a religion issue" and could set a precedent with unforeseen consequences.

Abeler said his amendment would clarify what can be permitted in MnSCU workplaces, in light of the Muslim foot-washing issue.

"The foot-washing thing is absolutely a religious accommodations which they should do.," Abeler said. "My point is that as we accommodate one faith, we shouldn't suppress the rights of people of other faiths...."

Other places are putting in foot baths:

Airport adds foot basins for Muslim cabbies
Police worry about Kansas City 'catering' to Islamic rituals

April 28, 2007

The Kansas City International Airport has added several foot-washing basins in restrooms to accommodate a growing number of Muslim taxicab drivers who requested the facilities to prepare for daily Islamic prayer, WND has learned.

The move concerns airport police who worry about Middle Eastern men loitering inside the building. After 9/11, the airport beefed up its police force to help prevent terrorist attacks.

"Why are we constructing places of worship for them inside our airports?" said an airport official who requested anonymity. "Why are we catering to their rituals? We don't do it for any other religion."

Other major airports also are dealing with increased demands from Muslim cabdrivers.

For instance, cabbies at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport recently caused a stir when they refused to carry passengers possessing alcoholic beverages or accompanied by seeing-eye dogs.
Alcohol is forbidden in Islam, and dogs are considered unclean.

There are approximately 250 taxicab drivers operating at KCI Airport in Missouri, one of the largest airports in the U.S., linking some 10 million passengers between mid-America and other U.S. cities. Approximately 70 percent of the drivers are of Middle Eastern heritage and practice the Islamic faith, sources say.

KCI Airport Police are responsible for the cab drivers, including the holding areas of the building. The KCI Aviation Department, which oversees the police, recently expanded the taxicab facility restroom area to include the construction of four individual foot-washing benches.

The cost of the project is not immediately known. A spokeswoman for the engineering department said she could not break out the figures.

KCI Airport Police Capt. Jim Harmon declined comment, explaining, "This is a touchy subject."

He referred questions to the KCI Aviation Department.

In a cleansing ritual known as ablution, Muslims are required to wash their feet before praying to Allah five times a day. They often complain that public restroom sinks do not accommodate their needs. Floor-level basins make it easier for them to perform their foot-washing ritual.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has pressed government agencies and businesses to install the foot basins in restrooms.

The controversial Muslim lobby group advises employers to allow Muslim workers time to perform both the washing ritual and prayer, which "is usually about 15 minutes [five times per day]," according to a pamphlet CAIR publishes called, "An Employer's Guide to Islamic Religious Practices."

Why are we bending over backwards to accomodate these Muslims who want to wash their feet? I say wash your feet in your own damn house. If they want foot baths so badly they should install them in their own homes. It's not the government's job to provide them a place to wash their feet. Jeez!!! This politically correct crap has gotten way out of hand.

Yeah, Pacman, that looks big enough for SOME people to soak their head in it, too; just go easy on the Epsom salts. :giggle:

Yikes. Yeah, I have mixed feelings. Accomodating students is one thing, and the separation of church and state is another.

Thanks Reba. That was an interesting read. What's next? Prayer rugs in the Student Union? Tearing down walls to install windows that face east so the Muslims can have their 5-times a day prayers? In case anyone has forgotten, THEY came HERE. If they don't like the accomodations they can always go back to wherever they came from. Jeez Louise!! Enough with this crap already!!

Then, I will demand a deep soaking tub so I can relax my muscles after a hard day of teaching!!!! I will start a petition to get all politically correct to accodomate teachers. :)

I agree with Deafmusican and Pacman...can buy cheap foot massages from Wal-Fart. LOL!

 Sorry to laugh, but it's true ! LOL

What biggest concerns me is that their influential will be greater than it already is. Look at England... there are sooo many Muslims out there and they are takin' over England. :eek3:

Yes I agree with Deafmusican and Pacman for buy foot massages is not expensive... *shrug*

You don't think there are any muslims born here?

From the story it doesn't seem like the students are asking for these things, it seems that the admin feels that the majority of the student body would use them.

Stop the hate, seriously.

It has nothing to do with hate. I respect all ethnicities and religions but this foot bath thing is ridiculous. The ADA requires that all public buildings and colleges accomodate handicapped people and that's why we have ramps and oversized restroom stalls to accomodate wheelchairs. But foot baths? Come on now. How about holy water basins to accomodate the Catholics? Or kosher food in the cafeteria? My point is if the universities want to accomodate Muslims by installing foot baths then they should also accomodate all other religions and ethnic groups too. So it's not about hate, just about taking political correctness too far. Where's the common sense?
