hi there! I am tired of incidents were police officers mistreat the deaf and hard of hearing. I am doing a project to try to get police departments to be more aware of the deaf community and maybe even be forced to recognize the sign for "I am deaf/hoh" to avoid mishaps. Please do let me know of any experiences you have had with law enforcement, or just general opinions. If anyone has time to answer a brief survey, please contact me. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks. Take Care!

some cops are fair while most cops are just pigs.

I don't like cops either, but without them who knows how safe our streets would be. :dunno: It would be great if cops, troopers, hwy patrols were educated in the Deaf and HOH community, but I'm sure they're gettin a lot of heat from from other peops too (quote me if I'm wrong). My advice is, if your regional/local DMV (depart.of vehicle registration) conducts any different ways for identifying on you driver's license that you are hard-of-hearing or deaf, then maybe stopping there would be a good place to start. just a thought. :)
as for other things, drive safe! :)

Yeah, sometimes- cops aren't fair.... UGH ! ! Sometimes they are fair.. weird ! ! :ugh3:

I don't trust cops in general, I have been mistreated by them, they have refused to communicate, they do not let me tell them what is going on, etc.

Well Many polices, state of cops and FBI , other in my family..

Funny My sister s husband who happen Lt. Police.. He arrests the deaf lady (steals things at store) and make her fool with signs> I m deaf I is deaf repeat with no voices. Also alike her hands to points her ears.. Then He starts signs.. She gulps.

My state of cop cousin arrest deaf man for speed and cocaine (sp). He is an idiot and got out of his car and same thing he point his hand to his ears and walked forward to State s car.. He isn't cooperative then My cousin pissed off and signs him.. He gulps and said doesn't touch my car? My cousin knew something funny.. Another state cop holds him.. My cousin inspection his car and found 1 pound cocaine( sp) !

:giggle:

drive fast, and keep in mind, a box of donuts a day keeps the policeman away

Nope it's not the donuts any more, it's philly cheese steak sandwiches these days the reason theyre not at the donut shops any more.

There are some good cop and some bad cop.. I don't trust cop anyway...

some of the cops here are crooks that did laundered money and they got fired or resigned.. now they got alot of new cops here that i dont recognize but few that i do know are good.. i have 2 cousins who are working as police officer in california. but one resigned as he didnt like after seeing what happened like little girl got shot execution style and he never worked in law enforcement again. He had a nervous breakdown.. I felt bad for him.. :(

I think abusive behavior is practically institutionalized for cops; look at the Rodney King incident, or Amadou Diallo and on and on. For white cops, racism is a CONSTANT issue. I've never heard of a single police force on this continent that was able to solve the problem of racism. When you count the people cops abuse; people of color, sex trade workers, homeless people etc, it is no surprise that they are also known for being useless to the deaf community- good on you Yessie for stepping up to do something about it!

Remind that

There's

Bad priest and good Priest
Bad people and good people
Bad cop and good cop
Bad Ader and Good Ader
Bad employment and Good employment
Bad Contractor and Good Contractor
Bad Manager and Good Manager
Bad Mother and Good Mother
Bad Daddy and Good Daddy
Bad sister and Good sister
Bad brother and Good brother
Bad Teacher and Good Teacher
Bad Government and Good Government
and
Many
>
> to Million reason have bad and good!

No perfect world !

Peace! :)

do you have a special license plate that shows you are deaf? Some states have that, it help EMTs and Police officers know that you are deaf. You have to have a written proof from a doctor, though.

here in ark.. we just put a sticker on the license plate so they will know i am deaf.. not a special license plate tho..

Alot of you are actually pretty amusing. How many of you actually know any cops? The broad accusations are quite concerning considering they come from a group of people that complain about being a victim of broad generalizations? Why is that?
Based only on your statements, I can safely assume that only one of you do.
As most know, I am a cop. I will happily debate police issues with you all. But, avoid generalizations and stereotypes. I dont recall if it was on this anti cop thread or another one, but someone made a comment about do-nuts? Sorry, I honestly dont know many cops that eat donuts, or a phille cheese steak sandwich. It would be very easy to start making ignorant comments about deaf stereotypes for me to prove my point. But I dont really think that would help the discussion. It would onlt make people cry about being talked badly about and stereotyping. Ironic huh?
As said above, if you want to have this conversation, lets go, but if you start throwing ignorant remarks, you better have some thick skin.

I've never had cops mistreat me. I like cops because they mainly keep the streets safe and keep the crime rate low, depending where you're from. There are always bad and good side of people, there's not much you can do about it.

When I ask abou tactually knowing a cop, I mean know them well. Not knowing the name of the last cop that wrote you a ticket. I mean a family member, personal friend, someone you grew up with, and so on.

Sorry, I have to leave for a while. I will check in on this thread when I get home. I have to go train the next generation of cops (teenagers interested in policework, the horror.).

I have actually dealt with many cops and intervened on cops in my city who were abusing a helpless native man. This same force was caught up in a scandal because they were circulating racist emails amongst themselves. Cops in a neighbouring Canadian city were taken to court because they had a racist policy of driving Natives to the edge of town, confiscating their coats, and letting them freeze to death. I could go on with more examples if you like.
