Parents Cleared of Child Abuse in Photo Flap

RALEIGH, N.C. — Parents who were charged with child abuse last August have been exonerated and reunited with their children.

Charbel Hamaty (search) was charged with sexually assaulting his newborn son, and Teresa Hamaty (search) was arrested for taking sexually explicit pictures.

The couple describe the ordeal as a "nightmare" that started over a roll of film that Charbel Hamaty dropped off at a north Raleigh Eckerd drugstore.

The photo that raised alarms shows a naked Kristoff, now 16 months old, getting a kiss from his father on the belly button, Teresa Hamaty said.

When the photos were shown to the police, the couple was arrested, and Kristoff was put in protective custody, while his half-sister, Victoria, was handed over to her birth father.

Teresa Hamaty was released on bond, but wasn't allowed contact with her children for months.

Charbel Hamaty spent six months in prison before the charges were dropped because of a report submitted by an expert saying there was no criminal intent in the photos.

The couple said they are happy to be reunited with their children and to leave their legal troubles behind them.

Yeah, I am the father of 4 years old brat and 16-month old princess. If they arrest me, I can sue them in civil court. I like to see the pictures of them in semi nudes. Thanks to the digital technology so that we do not have to print out at the Wal-Mart. If you want to get processed pictures, they would simply contact police officers and arrest you on the spot. That is a load of B.S. My folks did take a picture of me in nude. There is nothing wrong with it. Thanks to our U.S. Constitution for freedom of speech.

BTW, I wonder why Wal-Mart still sells nude in "R" rating in video/DVD. Two decades ago, they already sold "Mr. MOM" video.

The pictures depicted kissing not of the belly button, but of the groin area. According to this news article such kissing is a sign of affection in Middle Eastern cultures, and carries no sexual connotation whatsoever. It is a case of culture clash that the charges were initially brought, and unfortunate that the wheels of justice allowed such a cultural misunderstanding to result in an innocent man spending 6 months in jail.

There are so many child abuse that includes sexual abuse in this insane world. So people are freaking out or assuming the wrong things for other people who are really innocent.. They heard too much stuff on the news etc..
